Opinion: Coups are inevitable in our time…

The latest in coup d’etat in Gabon is only a reminder of how it is done. The army intervention in Libreville decided the fate of the ruling regime and deposed of it quickly. Today we are now discussing the fact and people are trying to figure out the future.

That’s why I am writing piece. The coup d’etat isn’t a new thing. That sort of military activity or sponsored means to end has existed for a long time. Coups have been supported internally and externally. Every nation has a various of different reasons for why it happens.

One key one is lack of good institutions or distribution of power. Meaning it could easily access all power by just taking out one man. If you got rid of one person and his associates. You are now in sole custody of power, because you got rid of another person title and office.

The “strongman” or “tyrant” is the reason for the viable option of coups. The sort of people who decrees, orders and who hold people captive. They use elections and other mechanisms to keep themselves legitimate. However, it is only the facade as the reality is much more grim. The darkness overshadowing their existence and their livelihood. They can only survive if they keep the fear, intimidation and the check on the pulse on anyone who doesn’t follow command.

That’s why coup d’etat’s happens and they also get welcomed by the public too. They see it as a relief. Even if the army commander isn’t elected or selected by the people. No, they are also future tyrant and possible brutal leaders who will quell all dissent. However, on the day and the early days of operating. It seems just like they are cleaning the house of the stench of the former despot.

That’s why the coups are in order. Yes, they are possibly quagmire and problematic. They create a fabric of government controlled by a minority group and possibly also the armed kind. These are the army commanders and the army structure left behind from the predecessor. Which again questions if they will pursuit all avenues for relief or investigate the breaches of human rights violations of the predecessors. As that means several of high ranking officials could be implicated or even sentenced or be behind bars for their actions. That is a price they have to pay. Especially, if they want to be sincere about reform and making a difference from the past leadership.

However, there are big doubts they would do this. It could not only hurt the bottom line, but also cause friction and endanger the new status quo. That’s why this is nearly never happening. Because, who wants to implicate themselves in crimes and acts of sinister activities, even if it was done on orders by a deposed dictator.

The coups will be condemn and seen as breaking the constitutional norm. Even when that is true and coups is a fallacy. Still, the elected government, which tricked themselves in, again and again. The ones who used the “legitimate” route, but did so with dishonest means. They did another type of coup and tricked the nation. These people weren’t the most popular or wasn’t the majority. However the algorithms and the rigged polls suggests so. Meaning the little civilian elite and the cronies of the despot is re-electing themselves on behalf of the nation. Instead of doing a coup with guns and ammo. The coup is done with data and altering electoral procedures to get the “announced results” and “win”.

When this is happening again and again. I understand why people don’t trust elections or even their leaders. I understand why people celebrate the demise and the toppling of tyrants. It all makes sense. They have lied themselves to the top and thinking nobody will figure it out. However, as we see… time and time again. They get found out and loses it all. Peace.

Opinion: Muhoozi needs to get the memo…

General Muhoozi Kainerubaga, the Senior Presidential Adviser For Special Operations and the Army Commander, the former Commander of the Land Forces and the former commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC). The avenger of the father, President Yoweri Tibuhurwa Kaguta Museveni. That man better listen and do it quickly.

The man is toying around with becoming his fathers successor. That’s been in the cards since the revelation of a “Project Muhoozi” in 2013. However, the times has changed and it isn’t even controversial. The General and First Son is now in the open campaigning for himself. His appointing his team and building his political platform/Pressure Group or future political party the MK Movement. Which is the Revitalized-National Resistance Movement (R-NRM) in many regards. Therefore, we know what is coming. If it isn’t in 2026, it is in 2031 or before that even. Depending on the sudden departure or end of his father. That is something nobody knows except for the almighty.

Let’s just be clear. The knowledge of coup d’etat’s and the sudden overthrow of despotic governments happen. Not only in West Africa, but elsewhere too. Things just has to get so grim and hopeless. That some patriotic or army commander steps in to fill the void. They come in as fresh air and believe they can spark reform and make a vast difference in the Republic. However, a lot of times… they just become alike the ones they overthrow. Just like the father became like every single one of them ones he toppled and has an even worser records as time goes by.

Muhoozi should read the room and should be careful. He can easily end up like Ali Bongo. If not be like one of the kids of Gadaffi. There is nothing that is certain. Even if he gets to inherit the throne after his father. We saw how suddenly things changed in Libreville. Same has happened in other nations too and it isn’t foreign to happen in Uganda either.

The only difference in Uganda is that his father used this method on several occasions and ensure to compromise or settle his opponents. In such a fashion that he bought himself peace and hope. That lasted for decades. However, Muhoozi isn’t the same breed or the same sort of character. Neither does he have the mental capacity or the charisma to pull it off. He cannot even dance on stage or show finesse in speeches. His living in a deluded world of “yes-men” thinking his the closest thing to God. While his just a mere mortal and not a demi-god like he think he is. Why do I say that?

Well, his invading Nairobi in three days. I don’t think he could barricade Kololo within 48 hours either. Except burning it down like the Palace in Kasese. This man isn’t a builder or a man of the future. No, Muhoozi is a man of the past before even settling into office. He got nothing to deliver and has no clue of how to achieve anything. Everything been handed to him and catered to him. The arrogance and the entitlement will haunt him.

Just like the funk musician of Gabon. The soldier of Entebbe or Kampala will be shell of man in office. He needs fellow wise-guys to takeover and be the shining star. However, we know that Muhoozi don’t want to share the spotlight and neither intends to share his power either. His a greedy and spoiled man. That’s why his bound to fail. He don’t have the character or the ability to figure this out. The Balaam of this world is only using him as a tool for personal gains and why shouldn’t he?

Muhoozi cannot grasp that and thinks his right. The arms and guns will turn on him. The moment the centre is weak and lacks courage. The moment the General and his men are not watching. That’s when the coup-makers will strike and his demise will be televised. The words of the fall of Muhoozi would create scenes of celebration across the Republic. The son of the tyrant and the end of tyranny. It would be finalization and end the chapter of the 1986 brigade. Because, Muhoozi lives on this myth and legend. He will further it in his quest of making the family a dynasty. However, it will fail and Muhoozi lacks the vital pieces of leadership skills to push things through. He needs others to facilitate and prepare for him. That’s why his a vessel that is bound to sink.

He might not see it himself. Regardless of that… his not that clever or smart to grasp the reality. Neither does he want to accept it. That would be humiliating and he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. His supposed to be next best thing, but his not. He never will be… and that’s why he could easily ask the public to “make some noise” after he was the avenger, the ruthless leader and the son of tyrant. That he wants people suddenly to save him. While he was in power… he didn’t mind keeping people incommunicado, kidnapped, tortured or even killed to ensure longevity of the regime. Nevertheless, the moment the army turns on him and they arrests him. He will beg for mercy and be humble.

Until then… he will act like the Crown Prince, the next in line to takeover from his father. Peace.

Gabon: The cousin takes over from the deposed President…

The story is turning and quickly. A man of all seasons. The Bongo clan is still apart of it. Now it’s not direct lineage, but still within the clan. The leader of the CTRI and the former commander of the Republican Guards, General Brice Oligui Nguema is one of them.

He was a trusted aide-de-camp to Omar Bongo. Before getting military training in Morocco. Later he would return to Gabon and then serve as a Commander of the Republican Guards, which is the Presidential Guards of Gabon. Meaning he was detailed to serve and secure Ali Bongo since April 2020. Now not long after he was able to dethrone and depose of him.

Gen. Nguema is now becoming a hero for getting rid of a tyrant. A tyranny he has been a part of and served. He has served both under the father and the son. There is reports of his vast fortunes, possible estates in the United States and so on. It is not like he haven’t earned hard earned currency during the years of the Bongo’s.

Now the cousin is taking over. We have seen how that lasted in Equatorial Guinea. There a cousin deposed of a family member who happened to be the President. He became the longest serving President in living memory. Teodoro Obiang who has been in office since 1979. Therefore, that coup d’etat seems similar to the one today.

Gen. Nguema was the man who was responsible for the safety and the security surrounding President Bongo. He knew the in-and-outs of the Palace. He was an insider and he had the knowledge of when to strike. That’s why today was well planned and happened shortly after the election. Just in the nick of time… when the President and his team was weak.

The cousin knew what he was doing and he must have conspired with others within the army. Just to ensure the safeguard of the plot and finalization of it. It is only a few years ago in 2019 when there was a failed attempt to overthrow Ali Bongo. Therefore, Gen. Nguema had to be sure about the timing and the collective understanding of the mission.

The dynasty isn’t totally over, as the cousin takes charge as the Transitional President. Regardless of anything. The temporary status will be pushed and the transitional period might be long. That is usually how these things tends to pass. There is a need for reform, settling and re-constitute the nation. Which means years will go by… unless there is coup against these coup-makers before a civilian government is elected.

We just have to wait and see. Knowing that an insider and a cousin is taking over. Just shows how small the world is and what sort of people that was surrounding the brutal President. Ali Bongo didn’t see this one coming. He would have never thought that the cousin would betray him. However, he did and he took his shot.

The General succeeded. Now the General and the CTRI has all the pressure on their shoulders. To prove that they are different and come with a better vibe than the predecessor. Peace.

Gabon: The end of the Bongo dynasty was today…

Bryce Fens Eligo Ngoma, the military junta leader, is being cheered up like Prom Queen in Gabon after the military coup throwing out erstwhile President Ali Bongo from power” (Insider Times, 30.08.2023).

From the 2nd December 1967 to 30th August 2023, one family ruled Gabon. Libreville was first for 42 years under the reigns of Omar Bongo who ruled the Republic until his death in 2009. While his son took over the reigns in 2009, which lasted to 2023.

The son “won” three elections, but clearly the popularity and the polls wasn’t real. The events of weekend is overshadowed by the swift house-arrest, son charged with treason and a military junta taking total control. That’s happening in the blink of an eye and the transitional CTRI will lead from now on.

We know that Ali Bongo will call havoc and he has even pleaded in a video leaked online from his house-arrest. A man who blocked the internet ahead of the polls and ordered curfews. A man who has been hard on dissidents and blocked any serious challenger. He has made it impossible for any competition, dissidents arrested and silencing critics. That’s what the likes of Bongo does. While getting months on end treatment abroad or shopping in fashionable shops in Paris.

The dynasty of Bongo’s was awesome. They owned flats and estates. They had expensive vehicles and everything a man could wish for. They could afford medical treatment in far away lands and delegate powers to others. That’s what Bongo used to do.

Now, the son and overstaying President is house-arrested. The puppet of France is now behind bars and his house has become a prison. He who just days ago got over “60%” of the vote in the Presidential Elections. These 60% aren’t protesting in the streets and neither are they crying out for mercy for the man. Because most of those 60% precent doesn’t exists and was only made on paper. A fictional piece of an election to give a legitimate mandate for himself. That’s why Paris is quick to condemn it, because the Bongo’s are their clan and their asset in Libreville.

There is a reason why the Gabonese people are celebrating in the streets today. The tormentor and tyrant has a fallen. The puppet of France is now gone. His family and everything surrounding him is being touched too. We are only seeing the beginning. Yes, there will be issues and contested decrees. That comes with the territory of coups.

The military junta will try to forge and secure positions for the long haul too. That’s what they do and ensure their own offices after the transitional period. They are now tasting the sweet fruits of power. Which will be contested and questioned over time as well.

As people celebrate and the ones in dismay are crying out for democracy. There wasn’t a legit democracy with the dynasty. It was a facade and a smoke-screen. The ones believing in Bongo and his cronies are blinded by the fancy titles and the cash-grabs. They earned the fortune on others misfortune. The ones in association had a safe-haven and a money-bag, but the vast majority of Gabonese didn’t and they felt the pain.

The now dethroned and deposed President made this plea today: “Make noise… for the people here have arrested me and my family” (Bongo, 30.08.2023). I don’t feel pity or sorrow for the man. He is getting a taste of brutal justice he has sowed upon others. A man who has taken life for granted and lived life in luxury. While others has lived on scraps. This man is getting a reality check late in life. Him and his family is feeling the true sentiments of the people of the Republic. Which they have misused and used for personal gains. That’s why the tone has changed.

It is up to the CTRI how forgiving and what choices it gives to the former first family and the cronies surrounding him. They will also be touched and possibly be in trouble. There are several of people who will feel the world tumbling down as their guy or President is caught by the authorities. They got to decide as well. Because, the CTRI might clean the house and that means several others will be touched too. Ali Bongo is just the beginning of that. Peace.
