“Ouagadougou, January 29, 2026). The President of Faso, Head of State, His Excellency Captain Ibrahim TRAORÉ, this Thursday, presided over the weekly Council of Ministers. According to the Minister Spokesperson for the Government, Mr. Pingdwendé Gilbert OUÉDRAOGO, the Council adopted several reports and made important decisions for the good progress of the Nation and the improvement of the living conditions of the Burkinabe People, in accordance with the Progressive Popular Revolution (RPP). As part of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, the Council has adopted a decree dissolving political parties and formations in Burkina Faso and a bill repeal of laws concerning their operation, financing and status of the Leader of the Opposition.
According to the Minister of State, Minister of the Territorial Administration and Mobility, Émile ZERBO, “this great and important decision is part of the re-founding of the state and follows a deep diagnosis of the partisan system that has identified many drifts in the application of the legal regime” political parties and formations of our country”. The Government believes that the multiplication of political parties has led to drifting, favoring the division of citizens and weakening the social fabric. This measure therefore aims to preserve national unity, strengthen the coherence of governmental action, open the way for a reform of political governance. The adopted decree states that the property of the dissolved parties should be handed over to the State. “The draft laws will be passed to the Transitional Legislative Assembly as soon as possible,” said the Minister of State, Émile ZERBO” (Agence d’Information du Burkina (AIB).
The signs are all there in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The ones who can’t see it won’t believe it. However, the Captain has shown it before and now it’s all clear. The extensions in the past was just a proof of what he was willing to do. That’s why he gave himself another five years in May 2024.
Now it is January 2026 and he has dissolved all political parties. In July 2025 he ended CENI and that was a big red-flag too. So, he has just shown the pattern and now it is all obvious for anyone to see.
He is giving himself long time and now window of transition. Needless to say, well, it is all about prolonging his stay and being in office. That’s why he has extended it twice already and has already a mandate to 2029. Which we know won’t be the end of his reign. Why should it?
He has no political parties to compete with, which he has now dissolved. There is no electoral body or such, which means the state intends to hold no elections. That means he can rule by decree and decide the future regardless of what anyone says. His the Military Commander and he abides the principles of chain-of-command. A Chain-of-Command where he reigns supreme and has the final word. That’s not a man of the people, but a fellow tyrant and dictator. The ones who cannot see… will not follow.
Another putschist and army commander taking the rule of law into his own hands. We can discuss how bad elected President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré was and the previous putschist military commander Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. They both haven’t served the nation any favours or done it kindly. However, that doesn’t make these moves any better.
This is just a sign when I said the move of ending CENI was a step into President for Life. As he now embodies the office and has taken away the civilians the option of getting people elected. Since the electoral body is gone and the political parties are dissolved. It is all one little step at a time. His encircling everything and consolidating power. Instead of doing it in a haste or a rush. He does subtle moves and with a little discrete. However, the bleak reality is clear. He does it with a purpose and people should acknowledge that.
This captain isn’t fooling around or playing. No, his intending to stay. People have tried to overthrow him, which is calculated to be around 23 times since he took power in September 2022.
Now it is 2026 and we can see it on the horizon. The junta government and the military powers to be. Doesn’t want to let go and the Captain wants to be the Head of State and without competition. That’s why he get rid of it all, in the name of patriotism, but it’s all personal and all about greed. The personification of the state is here and he wants to be synonymous with Burkina Faso.
Captain Ibrahim Traoré wants to be the state and the state to resemble him. That’s what we can see and people should watch out. His doing it softly, but sooner or later it might turn a different way. Time will tell… and if paranoia will capture up with him too. Because, his a wanted man and always someone seeking to take his place. So, there is no place of solitude and rest.
You need to follow his next steps, as his just consolidating power and there will be fewer avenues. If any that people can walk on. He will use unity and patriotism as a reason for it, but it is for self-interest and for keeping himself in power. The captain needs the office and the instruments of the state. That’s why he can’t let go and the sweet power corrupts. Peace.
