Eritrea: A tale of bravery that ended in death – Berhane Aberhe

The former finance minister of Eritrea, Berhane Aberhe died on the 20^th August 2024 in prison. As he awaited trial and sentencing for that matter. He lingered in detention and in jail for over years. He was arrested on the 17^th September 2018.

The former Minister released the critical book called “Eritrea My Country” in January of 2018. That book challenged the PFDJ, HIGDEF and PIA. They were all in thorns and couldn’t accept the message.

The Former Minister even dared to say that the President of Life, the tyrant of the Republic that he should resign and be detained at Arat Kilo immediately. Also, telling the PFDJ to lay down their tool and let a Political Power Transfer Coordinating Committee takes the reigns for a short amount of time. Just enough time to install and instil democracy again. After the recent regime haven’t had either and the President had consolidated all powers of the nation.

That is really a message that isn’t regular in Asmara. The President Afwerki isn’t used to this sort of criticism. As he is the demigod and the man above them all. His the guy that was able to gain control and never let it go. That’s who he is and he has ensured that every single mechanism, institution or such that is in his way – suddenly goes away or is silenced.

That’s why journalists, former central committee members of the EPLF and the former ones of the EPLF Politburo are either missing or behind bars. The ones who used know or have any say is either not there. The same with other important members of the PFDJ who is behind bars or in detention as well. They are all there… so they cannot challenge the President and his reign.

That’s why Berhane was behind bars from 17^th September 2018 to 20^th August 2024 without a trial, sentencing or anything of that matter. He was behind bars 2164 days without any charge or justification. Just a man who dared to speak out and release a book with his ideas.

All of those ideas aren’t maybe that useful or that insightful. Regardless of that, he had knowledge and was a prior insider. A man that was entrusted with offices and was even sent to speak for the nation at the United Nations in 2005. Therefore, he was a man that the President once saw fit.

We saw the fall out and the feud. The ones who goes after PIA are losing. He dared to challenge the President and telling him that he should be a felon. The former Minister told His Excellency that he deserved to be in prison and be detained. That’s what he did and that takes courage. Especially, when dissent and opposition isn’t allowed in the nation.

Berhane Aberhe was even brave enough to say it was a “mistake” to anoint and appoint Afwerki as the head. He called it a mistake to let him take over the party and give him the throne. Because, the party and the liberation front shouldn’t have done so. They thought they only did it for an interim period, but Afwerki always found “excuses” for not holding elections or creating representative democracy in the nation. As there was “wars” or even outside forces creating dangerous precedence, which made it impossible to hold these sorts of things. That’s what Aberhe saw and stated.

The writings of Berhane Aberhe was his final utterances. He dared to challenge Isaias Afwerki. A man who uses the state and the bondage of law against others. The man who has all the instruments of the state at his disposal and no one can keep him accountable. That man he faced heads on and he paid a price.

The price was his life. His family was touched too. His wife was detained and reported also a son was taken into custody. I don’t know their status or how they are living at the moment. However, I wouldn’t be hopeful. When they treat him like this and they want to send a message.

They could easily touch the rest and ensure their demise. As the President doesn’t accept any dissidents whatsoever. Peace.

Opinion: Sabiiti is a disappointing fellow…

To hear Jack Sabiiti speak in this manner of Dr. Kizza Besigye is just sad. That a fellow founder of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has turned this way. It is really just a tragic sight.

The man who has been entrusted over the years and worked in close association. To speak of each other this way. Where Sabiiti is openly maligning Besigye at every turn. It is so easy to see interviews and articles of late where he speaks venom against former comrade in the cause.

That’s just what Sabiiti does now to Besigye. Instead of saying what the FDC Najjanankumbi is doing differently or has to offer. His instead going after Besigye and whoever is in his midst. Just like the Party President and Secretary General. All of them are in cahoots in and in the battlefield to destroy Besigye.

That’s how this is looking by the day. The former MP who happens to be friends with former Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and Gen. Moses Ali. We know by the reports that Sabiiti has been willing and wanting to have dialogue with Museveni. Therefore, he wanted to betray the cause and get compromised.

Anyone who settles and hold talks with President is being bought and dumped. It is like Sabiiti doesn’t care about and thinks everyone has a price. That reflects on how he maligns Besigye. This is all happening after the “dirty” money and the internal quagmire of an affair, which has left two fractions dwindle apart from the party.

I’m just getting tired of the ones back in the FDC HQ throwing shade at Katonga Road and whoever resides there. When they are the ones that made them “person non-grata” and disassociated itself with the fraction. It was the FDC resolution and decision to do so. Therefore, whatever Besigye and his likes does from now is on its own. That’s the play and the options they have been given.

It is just tarnishing and damaging of the FDC HQ leaders to continue this path. It is bound to self-destruct, as they should their folly. Alas, they are maybe high on their own supply. Thinking they will overcome and become the noble leaders again. However, that ship has sailed and they don’t even know it yet.

Sabiiti should reflect on his choices and the manners of which his describing fellow peers. Him and Besigye should be friends and long term associates. These two should know each other and respect each other. Nevertheless, Sabiiti and the FDC HQ are only disrespecting and downplaying Besigye. They are treating him as the villain, the villain who only wanted accountability and wondered about questionable funding of the party. Alas, that is too much to ask of these fellow comrades, apparently.

That’s why we are here… and Sabiiti who is ageing should know better. Jack Cissy Sabiiti should be more reflected and have more insights. However, he prefers being on the high horse and never consider that it can throw him off. Peace.

Opinion: We should cry tears over Franck Biya…

This week’s “breaking news” and “earth shattering” announcement was made that Paul Biya, the ageing man is standing again for the 8^th time as the Presidential Candidate and the incumbent. A man who has run the nation since 1982. The President who has ruled the nation for 42 years and plans to make it 50 years, if he lives that long.

Because, if stands in 2025 as President, he will be 93 years old and planning to rule the nation until his a 100 years old. His a man who never ends his presidency and his reign. While his ageing cadres and comrades in his party is barely re-shuffled or changed. That’s why the Prime Minister is old and other representatives is of advanced age too.

Paul Biya is ruling by decree and by proxy. His the monarch who lives lavish in Switzerland. His the Ghost of Geneva for a reason. A man of all seasons and who only visits Cameroon when he needs or when his wife wants to bash in glory. Because, he spends most of his days in Europe and have a splendid life on the state coffers there.

Franck Biya is the supposed successor and the one in the ranks who is planned to takeover. The man of the future, but his ageing himself. By now his already 53 years old and by the end of his fathers next term. Frankie boy will be already 60 years old and soon ticking into retirement age. So, this man isn’t that viable either. Not only out of nepotism and family heritage, but by the definition of future.

Just imagine the great Republic of Cameroon main choice and contender is man that is 93 years old. A man who has lived his life and should be retiring. Not a man who can serve or be viable for the challenges. He can only rule by proxy and drop decrees, now and then. On occasion travel back to Cameroon and partake in the ceremonies and important affairs of the state. Meanwhile his loyal cadres and cronies are the ones that is running the state.

Biya cannot save himself and he has never ceased the internal infighting in the republic either. The English speaking regions are still targeted and without peace. The Ambazonia is left behind and they are now coordinating the attacks on the region together with Nigerian authorities. Therefore, this President has no plans to have proper dialogue or a solution to the problems within the Republic.

Paul Biya is the dictator and the tyrant who never ceases to be in power. The whole election will be scheduled and be protocol. The will of the people won’t matter. The 2025 Presidential Election will be charade. Only be an election… so that the President is legitimate.

The Ghost of Geneva is planning to die in office. He will attempt to rule until he clocks a 100 years old. That’s the plan now. The people of Cameroon deserves better. Not that they deserve a “one-family” rule them all and have the pin-pointed successor in Franck. However, Franck should be dismayed.

Franck is possibly 60 years old or close to that. Before he gets a shot and an opportunity to get elected. That’s the fault of his father who never gave him a chance or even tried to find a suitable successor to begin with.

It just shows how things are falling part. The cronies will rule by proxy and you can just wonder what will happen when Paul is no longer being a ghost in Europe. Peace.
