Opinion: Bazoum will not return to power [but be investigated further by the authorities]

West Africa court orders reinstatement of ousted Niger leader Bazoum: A West African court ruled on Friday that the ousted president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, and his family were arbitrarily detained and called for a return to democratic rule through his…” (SA Breaking News, 17.12.2023).

The final day in office for former President Bazoum was on the 26th July 2023. Now months after… one court has re-instated him, but in Niamey that won’t matter. The National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP) is in-charge and they have no interests in honouring this Court Order.

That’s why Bazoum will face more charges and more legal jeopardy in Niger. As his past actions are checked, assessed and publicly addressed. There are corruption scandals and misuse of power, which will haunt him now. The CNSP can easily target him and file cases upon cases. Because, while in office, you can get away with anything. However, the moment your out of it. The new powers can investigate and launch criminal cases against you. That’s what the CNSP has done and they are deliberately doing so.

Bazoum will not face freedom or liberty in the future. No, he will face trials, tribulations and trouble. The only way he can get away from is to run to exile. When the courts and the investigations can be done in absentia. Therefore, he shouldn’t expect the CNSP or the allies of CNSP to honour any outside court or court order. No, they will not care or be concerned, as they have their own cases pending against him, which he have to answer for.

Like this: “COLDEFF: nearly 300 billion CFA francs contracts in less than 3 years. The fallen regime singled out for nepotism and waste of public money. New damning revelations are being made about the questionable practices of the former power. Huge contracts were awarded to people close to Mr. Mohamed Bazoum. The oil sector seems to have been the scene of shameless favoritism in recent years, with the awarding of lucrative contracts in the exploitation, drilling or transport of hydrocarbons. More than 300 billion CFA francs would have been distributed in less than 3 years” (CNSP, 16.12.2023).

When reading this, you know Bazoum will rot in prison. He will have no future as a Head of State. The current junta and regime can have field day with this one. They are showing his blatant disregard of the people and misuse of power. That gives the CNSP all the reasons for the overthrow him and his government.

The Court Order given by an outside entity will not hold grounds. When the Nigerien authorities will be authorized to investigate and look into the misgivings of Bazoum’s reign. Meaning he will have no grounds or leg to stand on. His already in trouble and there is no way the leaders of the junta will save him.

The CNSP needs to make Bazoum the villain and ensure they have a righteous way to target him. Because, they cannot do this a plot or self-sabotage. This has to be done correctly and to ensure their moral authority and justification to go after the predecessors. Peace.
