Cameroun: Union Pour le Changement (UPC) – Assassinate d’Anicet Ekane, Leader de l’Union Pour Changement (UPC) et President National du MANIDEM (01.12.2025)

”We strongly condemn all forms of electoral violence and lawlessness. I assure you that this will not be tolerated and shall be dealt with very decisively. Socio-economic transformation and peace prevailing in the country must be maintained. The UPF and sister security agencies have been very tolerant and continuously engaged political actors to conduct their political activities in accordance with the relevant laws and guidelines. Some actors have deliberately refused to comply. I reiterate that we are duty bound to enforce the relevant laws and guidelines to maintain public order, a requisite for peaceful elections. There can never be elections where there is no peace. Acts of incitement, harmful propaganda, hate speech, declaring defiance, unauthorized campaign processions, destruction of property, defacement of posters, assault on security personnel, campaigns beyond stipulated time, criminality at various campaign venues, going armed with stones and other dangerous weapons to rallies and misuse of AI (Artificial Intelligence) by some actors will not be tolerated. I must state that the laws of the country are not in abeyance and must be adhered to as we carry out political activities. We urge all stakeholders to continue exercising their rights responsibly and respect the rights of others” (Uganda Police Force – ‘STATEMENT ON GENERAL ELECTIONS 2026 CAMPAIGNS’ 01.12.2025).
This is as old as time, but the Uganda Police Force (UPF) and the authorities are involving itself and being partisan during the Election Road Map or in the Campaign period. In the Republic we know this game and the authorities aren’t playing. We know the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and everyone involved there can do whatever they feel like, but the opposition will meet fire, live-bullets, teargas or probable lethal action towards unarmed civilians.
The UPF is trying to defend its actions and vilifying the National Unity Platform (NUP) while doing so. They are saying they are breaking the laws and not following protocol, but the state is stifling, addressing the public with violence and stopping the NUP from even campaigning in certain instances. They are blocking processions and other gatherings in regard to the NUP but allows the NRM to do it to every single rally. This is 2025 and we see the movies and pictures from the campaign trail. So, this double standard shows how the state deliberately uses their monopoly of violence and goes after the opposition. It is so deliberate; therefore, we know the gist and the lies are naked in front of us.
The Police Force speaks of law and regulation, but it’s only for the opposition parties to adhere to it and follow local guidance, meanwhile the NRM acts like Kings and Queens of the Nation. The NRM can do everything under the sun, but the opposition can’t even say a foul word. That’s the reality here and the UPF acts like we don’t know. Peace.
