Opinion: Can Kalonzo revive it?

“The Azimio Coalition has appointed Kalonzo Musyoka as its new party leader, with Suba MP Caroli Omondi taking over from Junet Mohammed as secretary-general. The appointments followed a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting chaired by Uhuru Kenyatta” (The Eastleigh Voice, 03.02.2026).

Will anyone care about the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition ahead of the next election?

This is a move made before the 2027 Elections. It is done to rejuvenate and change the Azimio ahead of that. There will be ramifications about this, but who really believes this?

Is Kalonzo viable or even someone who will be a possible challenger to incumbent William Ruto?

I have trouble to see that, and he must pick up the mantle that the late Raila Odinga left behind. He must show finesse, force and be a charismatic leader. However, Kalonzo haven’t been that for years and neither has he been clever in building up his own party even. He rather sprint along and take the safe routes. Not like a force of defiance or a voice of revolution against the political elite. No, he is just making statements and pressers but isn’t on the barricades to break the status quo. That’s why I have hard time seeing him as figure to spearhead a campaign against Ruto.

Kalonzo is the sort of politician that is seeking office and seeking a meal-ticket. His not the person who sacrifices and risks his future. Neither is controversial or willing to stand on moral codes in the midst of oppression. Other people will run to the streets and stand tall. He rather sleep softly and wait until the trouble boils over. Unless he changes his patterns and starts to unify the opposition. It is a hard time to see him capable of beating Ruto.

Ruto will outplay and outwit him easily. Even if Kalonzo has the best case and a vast alliance from across the Republic. Still, Ruto will be using the state and everything at his disposal to beat him in the polls.

It is just striking that Kenyatta has appointed the fella that called the alliance or coalition dead. We haven’t really seen it or been touched by it. Kalonzo has to revive this and be the personification of it. I have hard time believing that…

Kalonzo, the one who shift sides and who easily betrays his allies for a cheap-trick or a fancy title? That guy is the one I’m supposed to believe in and who will lead the nation? Really, that fella?

Well… if Kalonzo had a different history and had another vision. Well, I would be more hopeful, but this brother isn’t cutting it. Peace.
