Malawi: The government got to act and not be living on a prayer

Vice President, Dr Jane Ansah has appealed to Malawians to support President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s call for national prayers as the country experiences dry spells that threaten agricultural production and food security. Dr Ansah made the appeal on Sunday during a church service at Christ Citadel International Holy Ghost Sanctuary in Zomba City, where she joined congregants in prayers for the nation and good rains. The Vice President emphasised the importance of prayer and fasting during difficult times, noting that seeking divine intervention is critical when the country faces climatic challenges that affect livelihoods. She said the President’s request for prayers demonstrates his commitment and good intentions for Malawi, urging faith leaders and citizens to unite in seeking God’s intervention for favourable weather conditions” (Malawi Government, 08.02.2026).

I thought these sorts of things would be gone when the Prosperity Pastor and Evangelical Church Leader left the office in Malawi. The predecessor of Lazarus Chakwera and current President should know better. It just shows that the leadership just changed faces, but acts the same.

President Peter Mutharika and his Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah are failing the people when they are asking for prayers to solve problems. These people should use the government entities and institutions to help the agricultural sector. Yes, the government cannot control the weather, but it can help the farmers with irrigation and with clever ways of storing water for dry seasons. Alas, therein is the problem and where the government is lacking.

Prayers are fine and have hope in the Lord is a good thing. To be spiritual and have faith is also a fine thing. However, that doesn’t negate the need of using your mind and body to actually work. If you just acts like prayers solve everything. You have lost your mind. Even the scriptures speaks of this and says you have to put in work too. So, the government has to consider that approach too.

This is the same fault-line as all the prayer sessions and various prayer themes of Chakwera. Mutharika isn’t differing from him here. When him and his Vice President is doing the same. They are continuing with the same sort of action and thinking things will change.

The people of Lilongwe and Blantyre should react to it. They shouldn’t cheer this one on. It is just tragic that the ones in office is talking this way. These people should create policies and budgets to ensure farmers better irrigation and other means to help with the dry spells. Instead it is praying.

That’s an epic failure and the people deserves better. The state is there to serve and not to pray. The government is there to work for the people and not fold its hands. That’s what it should do and everyone knows that. Peace.
