Someone has to ask, because all of the former Leaders of Opposition and the ones that has followed politics for ages has circulated around Forum for Democratic Change and Dr. Kizza Besigye. Anyone denying that has lost a vibe and yes, National Unity Platform (NUP) had picked up the mantle after the FDC.
Today is the day to remember the ones that made people walk, so others could run. Nevertheless, the game is more gritty and grimy. That’s why we aren’t really seeing the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT). That Mugisha Muntu stated the party couldn’t challenge the state or lack evidence after the General Elections. Just shows how hard it is fight and compete to hit the threshold of the courts and have enough proof of electoral malpractice, which is well known and is clear as day. Still, it isn’t hard to understand the sentiment and why Muntu gives up. Because we see how the previous court cases and petitions has gone in regards to Presidential Petitions. So, it’s a burden of proof, which would be monumental and be so dire. That the state had to give way, but we know that isn’t in their interest to do that.
Forum for Democratic Change held their first real presser since the General Elections. Calling the elections a ritual of Museveni and giving him legitimacy. Well, Nathan Nandala-Mafabi isn’t wrong, but we all knew this before the Election Road-Map. They knew this before they even participated and took part of charade. They knew, we knew and whoever breathing with a pulse knew. So, what gives? It is just toothless and the FDC looks so lost and obliviously out of character. Patrick Oboi Amuriat and his fellow comrade has clearly jaded the picture and created a web, which has captured them. That’s why they are so mediocre and lack so much charisma. It is like they know and we cannot see how the party destroyed itself by cannibalizing itself by person non-grata Besigye and dismiss the Katonga Road Office. So, here we are and no tears are lost apparently.
The long lost and the latest creation out of FDC. The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) seems rudderless and without a direction. Their first Presser with Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was telling. When he cried out to the void that the International Community should come to Uganda’s aide and hold a independent audit of the 2026 General Elections. We all know the European Union and the other international donors won’t lift a finger. They won’t even bat an eye. Not like they are really caring about the political prisoners, the torture cases or other human rights violations happening on a daily basis. The erosion of rule of law has no consequence and the lack of the rights of bail is even tell. The weaponization of the judiciary against the opposition. Still, they remain silent and doesn’t act. So, the PFF won’t get help with this.
Just seeing these Press Conferences of Muntu, Mafabi and Lukwago is just so tragic. At one point these where honourable men of a vibrant party. They were pushing the envelope and feared by the authorities. These leaders was part of walk to work and defiance. Now, it is just meek and bleak. Yes, the PFF are hurting and they are targeted by the state. They have several high ranking officials behind bars and without any release into freedom in sight. These are kept behind bars and the state intend to hurt them. That’s why we know they are kept there and there is no single movement in their cases or in regards to proof or evidence of wrong-doing. Because the state got none and it’s all political. Therefore, we can cry havoc… but that’s the state of affairs we’re in.
ANT, FDC and PFF needs to re-evaluate. They need to reconfigure. Not because the ANT and PFF are directly wrong, but to sell and be viable. These parties need to be able to strike a chord and hit a nerve. Instead it is empty pleas and old-school politicking. Seriously, it isn’t it and these dire times needs more fierce and poignant messaging. Even if the what ANT and PFF stands for is righteous in their way. Their way of walking and talking aren’t accessible, which is sad.
Meanwhile, the FDC is a truly lost cause. Unless the current two leaders gets their mind corrected and a little bit of enlightenment. Also, if the leadership begs forgiveness and speaks of how they went wrong. There might be some redeeming factors, but the bridges burned might be to long and to personal to rebuild after the fire. Therefore, I wouldn’t count on it, but it would have been refreshing and that the brothers could have moment of humility and be humble. However, I don’t think we will see that either.
So, today is just a sad day. There is hope within the ANT and PFF. A lot of hope, it isn’t all lost, but to get there seems like a long journey. That will take time, but does these parties have that time. I’m not the one to tell, but it got to happen fast and be something suitable for the masses. They got to speak and get some sort of momentum. That’s what the old FDC had and we misses those times, as there was hope in the air and there was sort of futuristic play that the Republic could be different. Nevertheless, here we are and it all seems gone and forgotten about. Peace.
