“The situation remains confused and tense on Monday, January 27 in the city of Goma in North Kivu. Witnesses report that heavy weapons fire and shelling are intensifying in and around the city. The security situation remains extremely volatile, confused and tense. According to witnesses, residents lived long hours of anguish, punctuated by heavy gunfire and explosions in several districts of the city, including near Goma airport. It is since the night of Sunday to Monday, January 27 that detonations of heavy and light weapons have been resounding in the capital of North Kivu” (Radio Okapi – ‘Confused and unstable security situation on Monday in the city of Goma’ 27.01.2025).
No more radio silence. No more earth-shattering blistering ignorance. Now it is time to wake up and smell the coffee. The M23/AFC proxy militia is now entering and taking over Goma. The advances have ensured a total control of a region and making sure they can occupy the provinces of North and South Kivu.
The FARDC and Wazalendo alliance is weak when the proxy-militia are able to conquer and cease control of vast areas, which it has done in the recent month. They are now showing force and taking over huge territories. That is hurting the nation and the Republic itself. They are now not able to contain and keep the frontlines at bay. That’s why the M23/AFC is able to do this.
It is really telling how little the MONUSCO and FARDC is doing. When the proxy militia is yet again able to takeover and cease territories of this magnitude. They have strategically outmanoeuvred and over-powered the army. In such a fashion that even Goma has fallen to the militia.
The leaders of Kinshasa and the hierarchy of the DRC needs to hold itself to account on its failure. They have allowed and let a proxy militia takeover and create war. They have allowed a Rwandan and Ugandan supported militia to do this. The M23 has connections to Kampala and Kigali. That is well known and the logistical, training and ammunition has come through passages and channels, which is known in the other capitals. They have allowed for this to happen and most likely profiting of the warfare too. Therefore, the mineral extractions and the exploitation of the Kivu Provinces is a well established funnel of funds for the outsiders.
We cannot act like this mischief isn’t done with a plan. This is leaders and has backers of operational warfare. It has the facilitation and the support of which is making this possible. It isn’t a grassroot or coalition of the “willing”. No, this is armed attack and insurgency with massive support. That has been proven by UN Experts and been reported on to no avail. They have been allowed to strengthen itself and now ensure the demise of the government of the DRC.
Kinshasa has failed the Kivu Provinces. That is obvious to everyone. It hasn’t given what it needed, and this is why they are now occupied by the M23/AFC. It isn’t the first time or the last it seems. As long as the illicit trade of minerals are profitable. The proxies are getting funding and ability to create warfare in the Democratic Republic of Congo. That is the gist of things.
This is just tragic. Now Goma has fallen to rebels, the proxy-militia and everyone is just looking around trying to pin blame. Meanwhile this stalemate and fortification can only go on as long as someone is funding and logistically supporting it. When the allies and the ones doing it stops. That’s when the M23 has to leave to cantonment sites across the borders. That only stopped the conflict for a time, as we all see. Since the disbarment of M23 after the last peace talks didn’t last forever. Since the problem of M23 returned and the leadership of Kigali and Kampala has vouched for a return. If they didn’t… they wouldn’t have let their leaders go and also partake in the operation. We can just see it and it is heist.
It is a silent war that is turning bloody. A conflict that can be entertained by a whole region. Go from insurgency into a continental conflict or get the whole great lakes on fire. That all of the illicit mineral trade of the Kivu Provinces. The greed of taking other people’s wealth and selling it as their own. That’s the gambit and it been done for decades. Peace.
