There was reports of a mutiny at several of army bases around Burkina Faso, which was downplayed on Sunday. Now hours later on Monday, things has further escalated and the mutiny has been able to overthrow the two-term elected President Kaboré.
We will now have a military government in Burkina Faso. They are calling themselves: Mouvement Patriotique pour la Sauvegarde et la Restauration (MPSR).
What we know from the announcement on National TV is this:
“The constitution and government of Roch Kaboré of Burkina Faso are suspended by the army during a solemn announcement on the news channel Radiodiffusion-Télévision du Burkina. The announcement was made by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sidsore claiming to be “President of the MPSR” meaning “Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Preservation”. President Roch Kaboré was detained in a military camp by mutinous soldiers, security sources and a West African diplomat said, following heavy gunfire around his residence Sunday night in Ouagadougou. Burkina Faso’s president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, survived an assassination attempt. The situation remains uncertain” (David Kime, 24.01.2022).
The army commander behind the coup d’etat is:
“According to sources, it is the Cobra units of the Army special forces who are in charge. One of the operational figures is the commander of the 3rd military region, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba” (Djakaridia Siribié, 24.01.2022).
The latest changes of leadership within the army made by the President was by decree on the 3rd December 2021. At that point of time, Lt. Col. Sandaogo Damiba became the Commander of the 3rd military region.
What else do we know about him?
“Senior infantry officer in the Burkinabè army. Lieutenant Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba is a graduate of the military school in Paris. He also holds a master’s degree in criminal sciences from the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (CNAM) in Paris as well as a Defense expert certification in management, command and strategy. He is also the author of the book “West African army and terrorism, uncertain responses?”” (54etats.com – ‘Lieutenant Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, Burkina Faso’s new strongman?’ 24.01.2022).
We will know more with time, as we can anticipate changes in Burkina Faso. At this very moment, we can wonder how fragile and how strong this junta is. As one coup, easily re-issues another coup. Especially, if the some of the coup-makers and allies loses influence or power.
What we can say with certainty is that the MPP have been overthrown by the Mouvement Patriotique pour la Sauvegarde et la Restauration (MPSR). That is name and the current administration of Burkina Faso. Therefore, it is now official that Lt. Col. Sandogo Damiba is the new head of state until otherwise. Peace.
