Benin: Tigri’s mutiny didn’t succeed… but they say so still…

“Here is Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri, the one who led yesterday’s mutiny on Sunday, December 07, 2025. A soldier trained in artillery, he was the commander of the 3rd Interarms Battalion (3rd BIA), before being appointed to head the Special Forces Grouping, a unit under the direction of the National Guard and whose men are frequently deployed in northern Benin to confront the jihadists” (Actualités229, 08.12.2025).

“General Abou Issa, Chief of Staff of the Army, and Colonel Faïzou GOMINA, Chief of Staff of the National Guard, were released by the Defense and Security Forces. The Beninese Armed Forces conducted the operations with efficiency, allowing a quick return to calm in the country after the attempted coup d’état on Sunday, December 7, 2025” (Beau Gars, 08.12.2025).

Well, now that the dust has settled, the Talon regime continues in Cotonou. They are supported by the Nigerian army and possibly other ECOWAS nations too. Patrice Talon has survived yet another attempt to end his reign.

The coup d’etat would have been another one in West Africa. As the armies and army commanders take the power by themselves. That’s not new and isn’t unusual, as the Head of State and their cronies are clinging on to power for life. This is why the armies and specialized trained groups takeover and find a power vacuum to takeover.

If that would have happened yesterday… it wouldn’t be shocking or surprising, as we have seen it elsewhere. As the army commanders spots a chance and takes it. Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri and his fellow associates tried yesterday, but they didn’t succeed. They lost out and also met the air superiority of the Nigerian army. These bombed with precision and ensured the demise of the mutiny. Therefore, the civilian government continues but on a fickle grounds.

The CMR claims still that it’s operational:
“The Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR) informs national and international public opinion that the operations to dislodge the French prefect continued relentlessly throughout the night. Lost and deprived of strategic intelligence, the French armed forces proceeded to carry out a blind bombardment on a residential area, causing the tragic death of 74 innocent civilians in their sleep. Unlike the manipulations spread by certain compliant media outlets, the Presidential Palace is under our effective control. As for Mr. Patrice Talon, he has withdrawn and taken refuge within the French embassy. Furthermore, three infiltrated elements or saboteurs have been captured and are currently in custody for exploitation. The CMR remains determined to restore the sovereignty of the Beninese people and invites the population to remain calm. Victory is on the march” (CMR – Communiqué N°03 – du CMR, 08.12.2025).

There have been coups that hasn’t been a coup. This isn’t one of these, as there were so much uncertainty and unlikely ways out. We know this was important for Paris and for elites of France to lose out in Benin. They need some parts to survive and keep their perfects alive. Talon is a needed one and his leadership is in coordination of the French. Therefore, Macron did call Tinubu to save the Benin Presidency.

Patrice Talon and his fellow cronies have been saved. We know that he differs on the ideals of opposition and letting them run active in the Republic. The people of Benin deserve someone who is more open and sincere, but that won’t happen with an army commander either.

Yesterday, Talon was saved, and we know that the CMR wanted to be his end. Time will tell, but there is a will and there is a way. They tried and that’s why everything was mucky on Sunday and it’s clearer today on Monday. Peace.
