Côte d’Ivoire: Gbagbo went into his third, but Ouattara is starting his fourth

“Côte d’Ivoire: Re-elected with nearly 90% of the votes, Alassane Ouattara faces the challenge of power transition between generations. Despite the calm and lack of serious opposition, the country remains fragile without a clear presidential succession plan” (La vague de Bouna, 27.10.2025).

Not long ago, only 15 years ago that there was a bloody war fought over a questionable elections. When Laurent Gbagbo didn’t want to step down and Ouattara claimed he cheated. That seems like a lifetime ago and so many stood on his side. As Gbagbo acted like a tyrant and cling on to power by any means.

Now Ouattara is no different. Blocking opposition leaders from the ballot and claiming himself victory. That’s what he did, as he claims there is no successor or anyone fit to takeover from him. The old man is doing the sins of the predecessor and his proud of it too. The same is his party and the fellow elites that eat by his side. Because, they clearly cannot see what they are doing and what sort of sentiments they are creating.

Ouattara is creating a power vacuum and a lack of trust between himself and the citizens. As he hold them captive to his reign. It isn’t that clever and easily an uprising or any armed intervention could come his way. A mutiny and even an army commander with some prestige or influence within the ranks could scheme to take him down. As everyone knows Ouattara isn’t a beloved character in Ivory Coast, but is a beloved puppet of Paris.

This here is a popular victory or a surprise. It was a well prepared plan, as the ones who was his challengers was blocked from participating. That’s why no one else could win and that was the journey ahead. However, it is just striking to remember back when he called foul and went to the battlefield to take back what he deemed his. That man has betrayed everything and even gone further than his predecessor.

Ouattara has now stayed longer in office than Gbago and plans to stay an additional term too. The old man is giving people any reason to topple him. His doing it so frivolously too and thinking his untouchable. That’s why he don’t mind mocking the people and boosting his own ego. Because, this old man think he can get away with it. He should be retired already and gone away after the second term. Especially, when that was the overstaying reason of Gbagbo. Now his doing not only similar, but even worse.

This here won’t be the last chapter. There will be reactions to this and things will be fickle from now on. The President has to walk on egg-shells, because why should anyone trust him? His conning and deceiving. A man who does this to stay in office are willing to do anything. He thinks he can get away with it too. That’s when you know it’s been going for too long. Peace.
