“Senegal: a young man was taken into custody on Thursday in Saint-Louis after the dissemination of a video in which he is seen tearing the official portrait of President Diomaye Faye. The footage, which went viral, shows the perpetrator throwing the pieces of the frame and the photo to the ground, an act considered an outrage to the symbols of the State” (LSI Africa, 28.11.2025).
We can wonder what sort of freedom and liberties there are in Sénégal under President Faye. The citizens aren’t allowed to react or show anger. A citizen made a film in which he destroyed an official portrait of President Diomaye Faye. The President and His Excellency should understand this and allow it.
Because, if this isn’t allowed, are the official portraits of the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief a sacred item or a direct symbol of the state. As it must mean more than a reminder of who is running the nation. It is dire when a civilian is arrested for doing so and getting criminally charged for doing so.
This is just ridiculous that someone is criminally charged and apprehended for doing this act. Is this how low the President goes and his allies?
President Faye should show mercy on this man and his fellow kin. If he wants to look favourably. However, I wouldn’t count on it. Peace.
