Macky Sall wants to be a tyrant, a big-man and a beloved dictator. That’s who he is and we shouldn’t be surprised by this. Sall has already shown the signs of this over time. The way he has killed activists and stifled protests in the past.
The recent days after the announcement of suspending elections indefinitely. We just see how he does a social media and internet black-out. The President and the authorities don’t want the news out or the ability to communicate online. Because that hurts the ability of the state to stop and silence critics.
Sall is just showing his sinister side. That has been obvious for some time, but others maybe catching on now. His orders has already ensured that his main opponent Sonko is behind bars and his party deregistered. The authorities has gone after the ones who are popular and has people behind them. That’s why Sall is acting like this.
Sall is fearing the will of the people. He rather issue decrees and orders which circumvent the constitution. As President he wants to safeguard his wealth and ability to keep power. His afraid that the successor will avenge him and his allies. That’s why he does this and the people just have to accept it.
Now we are hearing the people are going into the streets and demonstrating against the President. They are not accepting the suspension of the elections. The people know why Sall does this and it’s a coup d’etat. That’s why they are reacting and certainly more lives are touched because of this.
We will see brutality, arrests and other measures made to ensure the successor or prolonged reign of Sall. He will use the demonstrations and the riots as reasons to stay in office. The instability he has created as an excuse to be the key factor to ensure safety and be the force of reason. Even if he is far from it.
Sall has shown his lack of democratic credentials. He has already shown it in the past, but now his just another one of them who is willing to risk their republics to get his way. There is no difference between him and other who does coup’s with guns. He does it politically, but not with the army directly.
We don’t know the future, but Sall is making the state of affairs more dangerous. His willing to risk the nation for his own whims. The deteriorating trust in Dakar is all because of the decree the President made.
The elections were already in question because Sonko is behind bars. Everyone knows that and a voice who has been silenced by default. He is a person of interest and someone that puts fears in the eyes of the President. If he didn’t… he wouldn’t be there.
Sall is letting the republic burn and you wonder when he will stop. Peace.
