Yesterday, the Amhara Regional State Council issued an “State of Emergency” as the Tigray Defence Forces and Oromo Liberation Army is advancing in the region. The Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) and its allies is clearly losing on the battlefield. That is why they are either retreating or perishing. Alas, there is some real trouble ahead.
The Amhara Prosperity Party in a press release today stated: “Since the season of survival war is going on, we need to accept the call of the regional government for survival and be prepared and organized and respond properly to the enemy. To do this, it is expected to work with the leaders at every step, to carefully follow the false propaganda, and to take action based on the direction set by the government, to build the youth mentally and accept the call of the government to join the survival campaign” (Amhara Prosperity Party, 01.11.2021).
Today, there is new calls to arms and the state associated media like Fana Broadcasting Company is ending most of their published content on social media with:
“Take care of your environment!
Kick it to the front!
Support the military!” (Fana Broadcasting Company, 01.11.2021).
When those slogans are on every single piece they publish. You know something is up and that the state is dire straits. They wouldn’t call for this, if everything was all good…
We know things are bad when the Prosperity Party Head Office for Oromia Fekadu Tessema called for the Oromo youth to enlist to the war. Ordin Bedri, the President of Harari region have also recited this stance to join the campaign. Also, the Addis Ababa city administration mayor Adanech Abebe called for the youth to enlist. In the same manner, the party office leader for the Somali region, Mohammed Shale who also called for people of the region to support the defence force.
To follow all the calls the arms, Government Communications Service Head Legesse Tulu said: “He warned that government keeps on taking measures on those who are working, in collaboration with divisive forces like the TPLF, to ‘disassemble’ the country. He has also urged Ethiopians living in TPLF occupied places to continue their struggle with the junta until they are liberated from the terrorist with the backing of their fellow compatriots” (Fana Broadcasting Company – TPLF Sympathizers Should Keep Their Hands Off: Government¨, 01.11.2021).
All of these here is a clear indication of the overdrive and the sudden change of pace, as the state and the federal government are on “high alert” after the advances. They are in whole new mode and modus operandi. That’s why they are calling out everyone and especially the youth to enlist in many regions. That says it all really. While they want the people to kick it to the front.
The Amhara region is in their “survival campaign” and others are following suit. This is a dangerous territory in combination with the hate-speech and the targeting of the Tigrayan ethnic group within the other regions. This will only be amplified with the losses on the frontlines and used as a retaliation, as every single one of them is seen as traitors and collaborators with the enemy, which cannot be proven by any courts, but only by the word of mouth. Therefore, the next few days are worrying and extremely dangerous, as the state is all in now and going into a new stage of warfare. Which could mean even more untrained civilians who happened to be enlisted will be sent to the frontlines and become next killed soldier in this brutal war. A conflict of hubris and arrogance, a war of one party wanting supreme control and another one wanting to settle old grudges. Now, the Prosperity Party and its allies are losing. Therefore, they are calling for the untrained youth to save the day. It’s pathetic and tragic, as the future of the Republic is being sacrificed so one man’s war can succeed. Peace.
