Ethiopia: Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) – Appeal to Swiftly Intervene and Mitigate the Dire Famine and Hunger in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia (12.12.2023)

Today we got the news that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali sacked Taye Dendea Aredo. That happened suddenly, because Dendea dared to question a policy or an action of the government. The appointed Minister of Peace is now out of office.
He wrote a piece on social media called “For the sake of the sacrificed children” and that must have been the reason. The Minister has also written other pieces lately which has been critical of state. That must have hurt the pride of the Prime Minister and alerted him of the insubordination. Because, he only wants blind loyalty and Dendea should have known this already.
I am not sorry for the man. He knew who he joined and accepted to be associated with him. As a Minister and a man of the party. Dendea stood tall on disgraceful policies, war-rhetoric and other measures, which wasn’t for the common good. Alas, it was all a game and Dendea thought he knew how to play it.
Today he sees the grim reality. Today he faces judgement and the fall. A man who bashed in glory and was a man of prestige. That was all built around the Prime Minister and his wars. Even as a Minister of Peace, he spoke of conflict and “unity” through the use of arms. Therefore, he should have seen this one coming.
The ironic part of his office and title. You wouldn’t believe he worked for peace. He would rather promote war and more conflict at times. I cannot believe that he cares or a concerned about the innocent civilians caught in the cross-fire. Neither pre-occupied with the prisoners of conscience.
I don’t feel pity for the man. He was a man of the PM and his reign. This man defended and was a supportive force behind him. Not just a random bloke or a civilian campaigning. No, he was a vocal one and who made pieces that was promoted by the government itself. While his foul rhetoric and the stench of blood. He didn’t mind at all.
This is why I wonder if he had a change of heart of someone close to him got into his ear. That’s why he suddenly renegade against the PM and the government. A government that he served in and was a part of. It is hard to believe it, but the PM has gotten rid of other who stood him near. Even the ones that ensured his rise to power. This PM can get rid of them all and won’t even flinch a tear.
Dendea was useful, but now his useless. He has lost his edge and is now expendable. That’s why someone else will fill his void. Sooner or later, the PM will totally forget about him or what he did for him. Because, he dared to question his motives or reasoning. That’s a sin in the Republic and Dendea was happy to even be a high ranking official. A Minister and at the prestigious, Ministry of Peace.
The Ministry of Peace, which is ironic in itself and how it was operated. There wasn’t much peace gained or even dialogue to be hold. The hardliners and the ones in the inner-circle wouldn’t had allowed that either. Not like the Minister was a beloved character or a sincere subject himself. That’s why I am not sad he was sacked.
He is just lucky the force of vengeance haven’t been put on him. Nevertheless, if the government strikes or harm him. I wouldn’t be surprised, because he knows to much and those are the ones you want to get rid of. He can hurt the PM in the long run and he don’t want that. Peace.

The ENAT Party or the Mother Party has in the recent days exposed the kidnappings, arrests and the displacement of members of the party on social media. The state has targeted the party and it’s leadership. Several of them has been arrested and been taken into custody. The charges are flimsy at best and done to undermine the role of the opposition itself. Therefore, this is a political prosecution to harm and incite fear.
That’s why today’s press release called: “War, kidnapping and mass incarceration must stop immediately!” is important to read. It is a sign of the times in Ethiopia. A story that the Prime Minister and the Prosperity Party don’t want to hear. They won’t listen or be concerned about the stories the ENAT Party is telling. However, it is compelling and vital to show the disgraceful acts of the government in the Federal Republic, which are now undermining the efforts of civilians on the throne of power.
ENAT Party begins by saying: “Our country Ethiopia is plagued by complicated political problems. War, kidnapping and mass incarceration have continued strongly. The government has stopped peaceful ways of struggle and on the contrary started using force as a political principle” (ENAT, 11.12.2023).
We have seen this for years, but now the opposition see the true character of the Prosperity Party. They are telling it as it is and not even concealing it. You know it is bad in the Republic when the government is “using force as a political principle”. That shows how they are using the authorities and the army to bend the will of the people. This is how it operates and silence the dissidents. Therefore, instead of using dialogue or sincere talks, the state will use the army and police to reign terror on the ones who stands in its path. That’s what the state does and it’s tragic…
ENAT continues: “Our country is closing its factories because of lack of foreign exchange, struggling to pay off the huge amount of foreign debt it borrowed, Debt Crisis is on the doorstep and more than twenty million citizens are waiting for food aid, the government is inhuman that is not forgiving in the history of the history to declare war on our people by spending fifty thousand dollars for a drone shooter. It’s a fact that it is. Especially the government is not from far away but because the war that happened yesterday in northern Ethiopia was not able to finish the war with victory and victory in the battlefield, why can’t we remember that the war ended peacefully? Also why can’t we learn from history? These questions are issues that need urgent response” (ENAT, 11.12.2023).
Here we see the mismanagement and the lack of priorities from the state. The state is more into buying ammo and guns, than actually delivering government services. This is a sorry state of affairs and shows the wars or conflicts are the priority of the state. The PM and his party rather bury his enemies, than actual talk or settle the grievances. Therefore, the civil wars and conflicts continues until the PM has consolidated the power. The state continues pursuit conflicts and wars to get ahead. That’s why there are several ones continuing at the same time and the PM is thriving it. However, wars costs and it kills the economy, which is happening too. Because, you cannot ensure stability or credible markets in the middle of warfare. Then there is enough struggle to survive and get basic goods to the war-torn regions of the country.
ENAT Party ends with: “As the mother party has repeatedly emphasized, the war that is being waged, mass killing of youth and imprisonment are issues that worsen the political problems of our country. So, as we have tried to think continuously in the past, we call for a comprehensive (inclusive), transparent and well guided political negotiation to provide a political solution to the problems faced by the country” (ENAT, 11.12.2023).
The Party is repeating itself, but it has to conclude this way. The truth is this and the Prosperity Party has to reflect on it, but we know they are bound by blind loyalty to the Prime Minister. That’s why they won’t stop him or his will. This reign is bloody and he will continue the warfare indefinitely. Unless, he can compromise and get people to settle to be under his wings. While he will find the next moment to strike and silence them completely. Because, that is what he does… and it’s showing.
The ENAT Party is sending out a warning. The people should listen and they dare to speak where others don’t and that’s why their leaders or members are now behind bars. Peace.

“Most of the Tigray diaspora have forgotten the fact: Tigray as a region of Eritrea is a ‘‘geographical influence‘‘ (buffer zone). One of the most common geographical misconceptions among many Tigrayans is the lack of belief that Tigray’s security depends on Eritrea. What is especially shocking is when you see the intellectuals of the region trying to convince the people of Tigray that Tigray is surrounded by water just like Greenland. But the reality is: there is absolutely no doubt that Tigray will remain Eritrea’s ‘‘geographical security zone of Eritrea‘‘. A bullet fired from Ethiopia: it will land in the heart of Tigray. There can never be a greater ignorance than to forget that 80%-90% of the EDF is dependent on the borders of Tigray. It’s when it’s said that a snake has no legs: a fool has no heart. The overall fact is that the Tigray diaspora will have to move out of fantasy and into attraction. To not believe that there is no more war on Eritrean soil: would be to voluntarily close your eyes and fall into a cliff. Whether Tigrayans believe it or not: there is never a reality that prevents Tigray from becoming Eritrea’s Gaza. The only option: is to create a strategic peace/ alliance between the peoples of Tigray and Eritrea” (Center for Research and Documentation, 08.12.2023).
The Center for research and Documentation, an Eritrean Regime Media outlet published yesterday a piece called: “Tigray: Like Lesotho or Greenland?”. It is another piece of rare revelations of how the Asmara sees the world. However, it is really unique piece and it needs to be addressed.
This is most likely coming in the safe-haven of the Red Sea and the Ethiopian Spinning the news about rights to Assab or Massawa. Because, that has strained the relationship between the nations and certainly also soured the diplomatic ties between them. So, in this regard… this is a new strategy and play from Asmara.
Eritrea is now suddenly saying Tigray and the Tigray region should be aligned with the State of Eritrea. Because, Tigray will be caught in the cross-fire and be the one caught in the middle. They are the ones that will be shot and hurt in a conflict. Like Eritrea didn’t violate the rights of Tigray and haven’t continuously done so since the war of the North started. The Eritrean Defence Force (EDF) still has annexed land and participated in war-crimes there.
So, it is very strange that the ones that was hurt, suffering and was weaponized to die. They suddenly should become allies with their killers and the ones who wanted to annihilate you. That’s what the Media House is saying. It is disregarding the recent history and vicious of Asmara as a part of an alliance to deplete, destroy and end the hegemony of Tigray. That’s what the game was about and now the tune is singed differently.
The Tigray region should continue to be part of Ethiopia. That’s where it belongs, unless it seeks total independence and get out of the Federation. Nevertheless, that doesn’t seem likely anytime soon. However, Eritrea will not gain this territory and the Ethiopian army would fight over it. Just like it fought over Badme in the past. There is no reason to think otherwise in 2023.
That the media house says Tigray should have a strategic alliance would be betrayal of the Pretoria Agreement and the TIRA would jeopardize the peace very quickly. This would benefit Eritrea and give them reasons to further extent their stay in the occupied territories. Therefore, the betrayal of Tigray would be a double edged sword for Asmara. Give them a handout and a way in. Because, Ethiopia as a Federation would issue war over it.
It is just amazing to know that people write articles like these in 2023. Like we didn’t know what the EDF did in Tigray and what horrific war-crimes it committed. The acts of Eritrean forces in Tigray should not only be condemned, but investigated and be real repercussions over. There is a need for that… and an alliance with the ones who did that. Seems a bit of stretch and a mirage. There is nothing to gain for Tigray and only more missery. They will have a new war and Eritrea would fight it on their soil, yet again. While fighting former allies in the ENDF and others… Peace.

“War should be stopped, doors of peace talks and negotiations should be opened! As a country, we know the damage of war in practice; our wound is not yet healed; we are not recovered from our sickness; we are not saved from the huge social economic and political crisis caused by the war” (National Movement of Amhara, 26.11.2023).
Yesterday, the National Movement of Amhara (NAMa) published a statement called “War should be stopped, doors of peace talks and negotiations should be opened!”. The NAMa is now calling upon the government and authorities to have talks with the stakeholders in the conflict in the Amhara region. This is another voice than the same party who was war-mongering in Tigray.
NAMa is speaking with a difference voice and rhetoric now that the war has come home. NAMa was fine and dandy with the tactics, the means and strategy in the War of the North. They are now calling out the government for doing the same and similar acts in Amhara region.
So reading this in 2023 just shows how quickly things changes. Yes, the war in Amhara region is wrong, but so was it in Tigray. A war that NAMa was supporting and defending. They even called for prolonging it and annihilate the TPLF. Therefore, we should have in mind when reading their statement today.
Where they said this: “The fact that the Amhara people repeatedly raised their questions in a peaceful way is not getting the appropriate attention and response from the government, raising the questions peacefully is considered weakness has made our people vulnerable to war and lack of peace. The lack of stage when our people showed full support for peace after the war and invasion, the people in the streets who make it look like there is a change in the formation of power and break the line The lack of relations, the public speeches of some high government officials who lack principles and irresponsibility, and the peaceful atmosphere that our people hoped for has led to widespread suspicion and conspiracy analysis rather than becoming a reality. The fact that the victories gained by the unity and the struggle of our people are not properly counted has become a source of concern” (NAMa, 26.11.2023).
The Amhara region during the Prosperity Party era was thriving as a result of war. They were a vital part of the Tripartite Alliance and one trusted ally of the Prime Minister. There was a leadership in Bahir Dar and Gonder that was in coordination and a helping hand to the conflict elsewhere. The Regional Special Forces and the Amhara para-military group “FANO” was partaking and promoting the war in Tigray. This is why the speaking of “peace” and such isn’t all real.
We know the Amhara region and the leadership of war wasn’t uneasy when the PM planned to consolidate power further and take control of not only the Regional Special Forces or Fano for that matter. This is why the Amhara answered the Federal Government and the conflict began. The Amhara region didn’t want to lose their power or their control of arms. This is why they went to war and Amhara Popular Front (APF) has been thriving. Therefore, NAMa isn’t addressing it, but instead pinning it all on PP.
NAMa continues: “We call for the government to create a platform to give answers and explanations to the honest questions raised by our people and to open the doors for the armed forces and declare an immediate ceasefire” (NAMa, 26.11.2023).
This is the same party that had war-cries and wanted to continue another way in another region. Now, they calls for peace, because they are hurting themselves and the war turned on them instead. NAMa is right in it, but they should have come with a different manner of saying this. As they fought for “unity” in the North, but that’s what the PP claims they are doing in Amhara. So, they are seeing what the Tigrayan saw in previous years.
NAMa says this: “To all the fighting forces; to prevent the current cost of living, market instability and other social crises from worsening; to make open the roads for basic commodities, medicines and special goods; to make social services such as education and health services reach the people without interruption; to the government to provide humanitarian aid in drought areas; to the non-governmental partner We call for organizations to make their support available without limits and other service institutions and religious institutions to be protected so that they are not harmed by the conflict” (NAMa, 26.11.2023).
Here we are seeing the same tactics and means of war to destroy the enemies of the state. NAMa is describing what the Amhara did in Tigray. While they where cheering on this in Tigray. They are now crying out loud to stop this in Amhara. It was wrong in Tigray and it is wrong in Amhara. However, NAMa never ceased or stopped their vilification of the TPLF or Tigray for that matter. This is why I feel their wrong voice of reason here. The Amhara region doesn’t deserve a war or a conflict where innocent civilians are caught in the cross-fire, neither does any other region of Ethiopia. However, we have seen that happening and ENDF are now targeting the Amhara as a main target.
I’m just amazed that they ended the statement with this: “We call upon all Amharas and Ethiopians living in the country and abroad to give friendly and honest support to the humanitarian crisis and the overall economic and social disaster that is happening at this time; encourage peaceful talks and discussions, and take a responsible action based on the value of our people that bring people closer to the people” (NAMa, 26.11.2023).
We should all seek peace, but NAMa asks for that for the sake Amhara, but wouldn’t do the same for others. Yes, war shouldn’t destroy or deplete the Amhara region. Alas, the same should have never happened in Tigray region either. Nevertheless, it did and the Amhara region has been hurt by the conflict. They took up the guns and rebelled against the state. A national army willing to retaliate and show its powers. Therefore, this was a bloodshed in a making and civilian lives has been lost.
If there is peace and the stakeholders of the conflict has signed a ceasefire or a transitional agreement. That would benefit the PM and give him way to focus on a new conflict elsewhere. That’s how the PM and PP acts… and if the guns is silenced one place. They are preparing to attack another one. Peace.

“As the regime reignites its propaganda campaign, it is important to set some things straight. The talks failed primarily because the regime believed it could entice the OLF-OLA leadership with offers of power and position while failing to address the underlying issues which have exacerbated suffering and chaos throughout the country. In this approach, the regime gravely misjudged the OLF-OLA’s dedication to its people and mission. It is worth noting that we upheld our commitment to deescalation and sustained our engagement in the recent talks despite the fact that the regime launched an offensive on our positions in Oromia midway through the negotiations. This stands as a testament to our dedication to reaching a comprehensive and enduring resolution. Our unwavering commitment to peace and dialogue remains unchanged. The door to negotiation is always open, just as it has been for the last 5 years” (Odaa Tarbii, 24.11.2023).
In November 2023 the world and the Federation needs to understand this about Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. His main goal and objectives is to inflate, love-bomb and cherry-pick leaders around. People he can compromise with titles and extravagant luxuries. That’s what he does and later he will strike vengeance, as his worried about being betrayed and paranoid as an effect of his leadership abilities.
PM Abiy key objective in any sort of enterprise is to consolidate all power. That means to settle the grievances, but ensuring himself on top. While the others will become his underlings and follow his every decree. That’s what the PM wants and if they don’t comply, he will say it’s unconstitutional and a danger for the Republic. This is when his issuing conflicts and warmongering to get rid of the ones that defied his order.
This is why I am not shocked reading what the OLF-OLA Spokesperson tweeted today. It is in line with my understanding of His Excellency in Addis Ababa. That’s who he is and this is why he has vilified the leadership of Mekelle and now going after Bahir Dar/Gonder. It is not surprising that the same government would also blame OLF-OLA for the failure to get to an agreement after two rounds of talks. That was to be anticipated, because the PM wants to be the saint, even when he acts like a devil.
The words from the OLF-OLA spokesperson should be wildly spread for one simple reason alone. It shows the game-plan and how the Prosperity Party thinks they can “win” people over. They think some quick and brief appointments can change things. That a little bargain and give way is enough to patch the hurt. While not really addressing the core of the matter or even the reasons for the conflict in the first place. Which is strange, but shows the motivation and the drive of the PP. They are all about the power-struggle and the idea that the juice of titles can entice enough to stop the conflict. However, the OLF-OLA has proven otherwise and that’s wise of them.
The PP and the FDRE Government have to reconsider its approach. It needs to sincere and listen to the ones who are in the battlefield. Right now, I doubt they will or intends too. They just wants positive headlines and get one less enemy of their backs. Nevertheless, the PP and the PM wasn’t lucky with that one. They couldn’t compromise or corrupt the OLF-OLA leadership. That’s really telling and their will too stand tall on principals.
PM Abiy and the PP has to figure things out. They are losing it and not doing the right thing. Instead they will go in circles, more bloodshed, await another “final campaign” and “annihilation of the OLF-OLA” in the Oromia region. Alas, that will amount to nothing and only cause more suffering. That’s all there is too this and somewhat, it’s like the PM and his cronies never learns. Peace.
