“Police in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, fired tear gas into a crowd of opposition leaders and supporters who were marching to demand the dissolution of the country’s electoral commission ahead of next year’s election. Over the weekend, Odinga and other leading politicians demanded the disbandment of the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC), and vowed to storm its offices to eject its commissioners. Mr Odinga rejected the 2013 election result that brought President Uhuru Kenyatta into power, alleging massive fraud” (NBS TV Uganda, 2016).

“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission headquarters in Nairobi is at this moment under tight security with officers from the General Service Unit and regular Police manning Anniversary Towers to ward off threats by the opposition CORD’s coalition to storm the offices to eject IEBC commissioners from office. Police under the command of Nairobi County Commander Japheth Koome have however vowed to stop the protest warning those bent on causing disruption in the city that they will be dealt with accordingly. CORD leaders had over the weekend threatened to lead their supporters to IEBC offices after the commission rejected signatures submitted for the Okoa Kenya referendum push” (K24TV, 2016).

“NO ROOM FOR PROTESTING:  Following the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) threat to forcefully evict electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from the office, heavy security guard of more than 50 police has been deployed at the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi ahead to see to it the protest is curbed. Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome who was addressing the press outside IEBC offices Monday morning warned that police officers are under instructions to deal with anyone who attempts to cause chaos and disturb the peace during the march” (Kenyatta University Television – KUTV, 206).

Peace.

Running battles as UoN students protest alleged rigging of elections & University of Nairobi students torch SONU offices in fresh protests against Babu Owino’s re-election (Youtube-Clips)

“Students at the Nairobi University for the better part of Monday engaged in riots causing damage of unknown value to both motorists and the institution. This followed student leadership elections held at the end of last week which they claim were not free and fair. Babu Owino was elected for a fourth term as the chairman of the University’s students’ organization SONU. The unruly students, while chanting songs, took over key roads around the institution including State House Road, the University Way, Ojinjo Road and a section of Waiyaki Way. However, law enforcers soon subdued them blocking their march into the central business district, something that led to their change of plan forcing them to use the underpass bridge to their main campus where they set SONU offices ablaze. They later moved to Uhuru Highway where they pelted motorists with stones causing the law enforcers to lob teargas to disperse them. According to the University Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Student Affairs Professor Isaac Meroka, the elections were free and fair and those who feel aggrieved should follow due process” (Citizen TV Kenya, 2016).
