Ethiopia: The marriage of convenience between TPLF-OLF seems to be over [and is this the end of United Front of Ethiopian Federalist and Confederalist Forces (UF) too?]

Only in November of 2021 there was nine Liberation Fronts of Ethiopia that went together to fight the Prosperity Party (PP) and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali reign. The last 48 hours seems to have shattered the work and alliance between the two major Liberation Fronts in the United Front of Ethiopian Federalist and Confederalist Forces (UF), which happens to be the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

That has happened as the Regional Government of Tigray and the TPLF came out with a statement on the 11th September named “The Government of Tigray’s Stance on a Peaceful Resolution of the Current Conflict” and a vital part of that statement says this:

To that end, the Government of Tigray is prepared to participate in a robust peace process under the auspices of the African Union (AU). Furthermore, we are ready to abide by an immediate and mutually agreed cessation of hostilities in order to create a conducive atmosphere. Indeed, the Government of Tigray has repeatedly called for, and worked towards, the peaceful resolution of the current conflict. The Government of Tigray’s prior unilateral compliance with the cessation of hostilities is a case in point” (Regional Government of Tigray, 11.09.2022).

That seems to hurt the Oromo Liberation Front, which came out with a Press Release today on the 12th September 2022 called: “Oromos Should Defend their fate by themselves and from now on No alliance or cooperation is needed, especially from the Disgraced TPLF”. Where the OLF says this:

We the Oromo’s deceived by the TPLF liars many times and didn’t learn from the past. In recent times the TPLF leaders was overstating their possible discussion with the current Government of Ethiopia Empire. They were expressing it by their president Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, “TPLF will not seat with Abiy Ahmed PP Government unless the other fighting liberation’s fronts involved”. TPLF is the most silky liars’ group. Now the statement just released from TPLF has expressed their interests to discuss with Abiy’s Government without any precondition anywhere/anyplace. The world should know this clearly, the OROMO liberation struggle has now reached to a point of no return. From Now On, Oromo will not cooperate with other “struggling fronts”, since the state of Oromos distrust on any so-called liberation fronts in Ethiopian Empire reached the ultimate high” (OLF, 12.09.2022).

This here sets the stage for the end of not only the collective efforts of OLF-TPLF, but also the possible end of the UF. Because, the two main Liberation Fronts are ceasing ties. The OLF doesn’t trust the TPLF anymore. That is the message sent from Oromia to Tigray. The two Liberation Fronts, which have been assaulted, massacred and been directly targeted by the authorities in the years of Abiy. There been offensives and military operations directly going after the OLF and TPLF. Therefore, these two could help each other and the conflicts they are in currently.

Now, we are seeing an official fallout. We are seeing the OLF distancing itself and maligning the TPLF. In a fashion that we couldn’t have expected just a month ago. That means there been happenings and actions behind closed doors. There are certainly a lot more at stake and the OLF feels betrayed by the statement released from the TPLF. That is clear and the PP government is the one winning on this.

The OLF isn’t winning anything by distancing itself from the TPLF. The TPLF isn’t getting more leverage by negotiating alone with the PP either. They are all losing and has less fire-power against the current regime. This is a loose-loose game and no one is winning. That is the gist of it here. The liberation fronts ceasing to work together is only good news in the Palace in Addis Ababa. The leaders of Finfinne is getting a gift by doing this. The armed opposition is directly ensuring less of communication and possible coordinating affairs. If there is a need for a new aim to overthrow or a coup d’etat, which the Liberation Fronts would work for. They can only do that alone now and the they cannot come from various of battlefronts and make it harder for the ENDF to compete with the offensives.

The OLF feels betrayed and that’s rightfully so. The TPLF should communicate and try to get connected with the OLF again. Especially, if they want to really overcome the regime that is running the Republic today. The ones losing here is the people of Mekelle and Dire Dawa. This is sad news really. Because, this could be the nail in the coffin of the UF as well. Unless, they want to be a 8 Liberation Front group without the OLF. However, that is a weakened team and they should all be United.

That’s why the TPLF needs to act upon this and needs to read the room. This is if they want to clear their name and ensure they are coordinating with their fellow Liberation Fronts. The OLF has just spoken out and addressed their grievances. That’s why it’s up to TPLF to act upon it or let it be bygones. Peace.
