Update: The Kenya COVID-19 Fund raises over Kshs 2.7 Billion for Emergency Response (30.04.2020)

Well, the man of Hennessey and Chaos. The man of dodgy history, electoral blunders and possible graft. The man of weird public addresses and also even more flamboyant outfits. The one and only Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is back-at-it.
The man who signed of several of functions to the state on the 25th of February and gave it away at the State House on the 18th of March. Instead of getting impeached or even continued trial on the charges put on him at the end of last year. Just like that it went away, as the President didn’t need to have votes against in the county or get him impeached. Therefore, instead the President ushered in a trusted Major General Mohammed Abdallah Badi. Who would carry the tasks that wasn’t for Sonko anymore.
Now today on the 29th of April. Suddenly, the administration of Sonko is back-peddling the affairs. They are initiated that the functioned for the appointed Major General are turned back to Sonko. A Sonko whose still not allowed by the Courts to appoint a Deputy. The same man who is on public display behind the President and if not his doing something ridiculous.
I’m just awaiting him striking back with a stingy dance, filled with all his bling-bling and sell his bling-bang. He will go full circle, show all his true colours and schemes. Ensure that he gets his power back. While certainly the State House will not accept that. As they did a merciful thing earlier in the year. As he have not continued the cases against him and not caused more trouble.
Instead Sonko is a free-man, enjoying the perks of the office and being in the public eye. Even as the grand corruption is hanging over him. Not that it has bothered him much. He can still buy Hennessey and tell some good stories on the radios.
So for now, Mike Sonko is not giving way. He is shooting back and wanting the whole throne. While that might even end up Dethroning him. As the State House and allies either will impeach him and have a unwanted by-election. If not, they will force him to loose the strings and back-off, with the fear of possible retaliation. Which the Governor don’t want to see.
The governor better drink his whiskey and back-off. This is not his game, he gambles and he forgets that the [State] House always wins. Peace.

The 3rd Progress Report of the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on the COVID-19, which is dated to the 28th April 2020. What it says is really reliable and also the status of the Health Care system in the Republic. I will just take a gist from it, but what it s says is really powerful.
The Republic has 518 ICU beds, where already 448 ICU Beds are already in used by non-COVID-19 patients who needs critical care services. There are a total of 297 ventilators in the Republic, but only 90 ventilators in the public hospitals. The state has bought another addition of 30 ventilators on the onset of the COVID-19. However, it is not sure of the distribution of these when the Report was written.
The worst case scenario would be 300,000 Kenya’s citizens losing their lives. While, the republic has this amount of trained health care workers, that needs to be shielded in this pandemic. These are the 188 medical officers, 72 medical specialists, 94 clinical officers, 235 ICU nurses, 94 chest physiotherapist sand 20 epidemiologists. So, it is not that many and these needs to secured, as they can get sick, as they are trying to heal the ones catching the virus. We are seeing it is not that many and they need a long education to get there. It is not like you can overnight become a qualified ICU nurse or medical specialists.
Just these stats should be worry. Even if the numbers right now is officially low, as the amount of verified COVID-19 is at 384, recoveries are at 129 and 14 deaths. Also, they have Ministry of Health has tested 19.491. Therefore, the numbers aren’t that big yet, but if all spread is high or lack contract tracing. Than, there might be lacking the full picture. This is something the whole world is struggling to do. Therefore, the Kenyan government is not alone with this.
That is why I showed the numbers from the Senate Report from yesterday. Because, that is the most accurate you can get. That is not random numbers and showing a picture, which is needed at this point. Especially, as the lockdown and the importance of it.
Since, if it is not followed, if the quarantines and the staying at home orders not followed. If people congregate and goes social, the thing most likely to be spread. Than, asymptomatic people, who caught it without knowing is spreading to other without any symptoms. This is why, this is needed. The Ministry of Health isn’t that prepared.
That is clear by the report. Showing the neglect of the state, as it hadn’t a giant amount of specialists or ICU beds. Just like the report of about 1,4 ordinary hospital beds per 1,000 citizens. That is why its worrying. Because, it is even less of ICU beds compared to ordinary hospital beds.
Maybe, that’s just me. As this shows how the lack of priorities from the state is clear. Since, they are not having either equipment, trained personnel or ICU beds. They have very few ventilators, many in a private hospitals, meaning the person has to afford the services. Not only get to a public hospital, where the state covers more. This is why there will be aftermath after this too. Since, some will struggle to pay for family members into private hospitals, as they are maybe not space in the closest public hospital. That should send a red-flag.
We just have to pray, that COVID-19 doesn’t hit Kenya hard. I really hope not. Just adding the numbers and showing the worst scenario. It says how bad it could go. What we can say is that the MoH and the state wasn’t prepared for it and didn’t have a robust Health Care system in-case. It have the bare minimum and only buy a small addition of ventilators. They will have little value if the few who are specialists or trained nurse gets quarantined or sick. Which usually occur… Peace.

“A world where roses bloom
And when you speak, angels sing from above
Everyday words seem to turn into love songs
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
“La vie en rose”” – Louis Armstrong – ‘La Vie En Rose’ (1950)
Well, I had to do this, as the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta had the funds, the money and time to send 300 bouquets roses to the United Kingdom in solidarity. Not only that, the President booked a flight for this and wrote a message to front-liners of the UK. It is a nice gesture, but not the right time for him to do this. As the Kenyan economy, Kenyan society and citizens needs the support, his frontliners needs this and so fourth. Not sending this to London and the former colonizers. It is just weird. Could expect Macky Sall sending flowers to Paris. He loves France, but seeing Kenyatta doing this is just weird.
Just look at this:
“There have been a few moments in history when the world has faced a crisis as far-reaching and consequential as this. It is exactly at moments such as this that we must display our humanity, perseverance and hope. Whatever the adversity, no matter the foe, we shall triumph together. We stand united. Tuko Pamoja. From Kenya with love – H E Uhuru Kenyatta” (Standard Media, 25.04.2020).
It is nice with solidarity and showing goodwill. Have never really any trouble with that. That is supposed to be positive. That its happening the opposite way is also a good thing. However, I hope the frontliners of UK is happy for this. Because, this is a costly endeavour and lack of priority.
Kenyatta should focus on fixing the Health Care, Hospitals, getting PPE and ventilators. Ensuring the governors have funds to give away food for the needy. Securing the citizens with what they need during the lockdown. Not, spending a fortune on a gig and gifts to the United Kingdom. This plane and the cost of doing so could have saved more lives and food for the ones whose starving. That is what the President decided to do.
The Kenyan President is free to do this, but he should answer the Parliament for the expenditure and the costs of doing this. Yes, the flower industry is hit – worldwide. That is why the Netherlands is struggling to sell their flowers on the European continent. The same is most likely hitting the Kenyan roses too. As the worldwide lockdown is hitting the export industry. The sending of 300 bouquets is a symbolic action to remember the flower industry in Kenya. However, the UK will not resolve this quickly. They will forget this act in a swift second.
As quick as the flowers came on the tables and to the frontliners. It will be forgotten in the heartache and suffering, as the COVID-19 deaths are appearing. Kenyatta should know this, but he uses yet another Cambridge Analytica PR Stunt. Thinking this will solve things. These flowers will be gone as I write. The bouquets will be forgotten in the UK.
Instead of using this resources, paying nurses, doctors and import needed goods. He spent a small fortune export flowers. That is wrong priorities in the midsts of this crisis. Some might say in the scheme of things, hiring the plane and buying the flowers isn’t so costly. Well, for the ones living hand to mouth and waiting for help. These funds are more valuable then ever. Especially, during a global pandemic. When IMF and other international organizations starting to suspend loan interests and others to cover the expenses of this time.
That is the moment to show austerity and priority for your own. That isn’t selfish, but the right thing to do. You are not trying to give the last rose on the Bachelor. No, you giving the ugali to the one person who needed it more. The UK don’t need your flowers now. Sure, they appreciated it and enjoyed it for a brief second. However, the cost for that isn’t worth it. Especially, knowing the state of affairs at home. Peace.
