The UN Refugee Agency – the UNHCR Situation Report Number 22 published on the 30th September 2021. It is published on the day high ranking officials from several of UN organizations including the UNCHR had become “person non-grata” and had to leave within 72 hours. Therefore, this report is vital and important.
We know the Prosperity Party and the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali doesn’t want this published or discussed. As they are disregarding the reality and want it to go away. The government doesn’t care about the plights or the suffering of the Tigray region. Neither the woredas or provinces, which has been hit by the same worrisome situation, as the Tigray Defence Force (TDF) has annexed the regions.
The UNCHR states this: “The corridor from Debark to Mai Tsebri where the Mai Aini and Adi Harush refugee camps are located is still not accessible due to insecurity, while fully loaded supply trucks cannot cross the bridge to Mai Tsebri from the Shire side until repair works are complete. Discussions on how to move food for distribution in the refugee camps are ongoing, as with the route through Amhara region closed, the food needs to be moved from WFP’s warehouse in Gondar, through Semera in Afar region into Mekelle and then to Shire and across the bridge to Mai Tsebri. Meanwhile, distribution of a partial monthly food ration began on 23 September with the limited food items remaining in warehouses on site” (UNCHR, 30.09.2021).
Here we see how the infrastructure destruction during the warfare is stopping the needed humanitarian assistance. The state is willingly blocking the entering and the possibility to get aid into the Tigray region. We know the region already lacks food, medicines and basic necessities. Also, the blockade of fuel, electricity and communications like phone and internet. So, keeping the region in the dark and also the areas of which the TDF has invaded as well.
The most striking passage of this report is this: “The humanitarian situation across the Tigray Region remains deeply concerning for refugees, the internally displaced and host communities. Civilians have endured ten months of conflict with extremely limited basic services and assistance available, leading to a significant escalation in humanitarian needs with ongoing new displacements. The security situation remains volatile, affecting civilians and constraining humanitarian actors on the ground. Communication, electricity, and banking services remain intermittent. The conflict is now also affecting civilian populations in neighboring Amhara and Afar regions” (UNCHR, 30.09.2021).
Here they are saying what the government doesn’t want out. It want this fact silent and the supports of the state calls this “fake” or “forged” to support the TPLF. Which is false, as these are citizens, civilians and people caught in-crossfire, because the PM wanted to consolidate power. A move that wasn’t approved and accepted by the Regional Government in Tigray and he made a choice to retaliate and use military means to get his will. Therefore, the general public have to suffer, because one man wants to rule supreme by any means possible. The PM and the PP is blocking the aide and humanitarian assistance from entering, which is only making the situation worse by the day.
Everyone living in the region is touched by this and the state is willing to let the people live in this agony without any prospects or hope of change. Since the state is weaponizing the man-made famine and starvation. That’s why it targets NGOs and UN Organizations. Especially, the ones that make the emperor look naked. He is supposed to be the grand statesman, but a statesman doesn’t let citizens/civilians die within in his own domain. When he can easily get them the needed humanitarian assistance and basic necessities. However, that is not priority of the Prosperity Party. Peace.
