Lesotho: New restrictive law for social media and online content

In Lesotho, the authorities and the lawmakers are proposing a new law. Which, if a person has more than 100 followers on Social Media. This meaning Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp or heck, even TicTok. They got to get license to broadcast and the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) have the access to remove content from the set-user.

This is what everything boils down too. That the state are willing to interfere and control the users. The smartest thing the citizens could do. Is to create various of profiles and have cohorts of people in the margin of 99 people. So, that they don’t have to comply with the new regulation.

Because, if they reach a 100 people. They will need a license. These people will need to comply with the rules of the LCA. They must deliver paperwork on who they are, identification, also proof of residence and business.

This is all done to follow and ensure the LCA can remove and block certain content by users of social media in Lesotho. That means that the LCA practically can remove all sort of content it deems as unfit. If a person has over 100 followers, which is a limited reach.

This is the new “internet broadcasting” rules of 2020. Any sort of internet post going out to a fixed number. Got to comply with this regulation. That is how frighten and how fearful the authorities is. If it is a web page, a social media post or a Youtube video. The LCA got to verify the content before its published. If not, they have the rights to delete it and deactivate it.

This here is interfering in people’s privacy. In their direct communication and usage of modern platforms. A way of licensing and authorising people to publish content. In manner, which an Authority will have oversight and direct control. Where they have the legal jurisdiction to remove or delete content as they see fit. If that being a blogpost, a Facebook-Update, a Tweet and even a Message within WhatsApp. The state can through the Authority get rid of that. This is what it means.

The representatives, the government and the ones governing Lesotho is so afraid of their population. So, they have the need to have the power and the legislation to have total control of the flow of information and content online. Because, it is restrictive to have access to every social media, every webpage and such with 100 followers. There isn’t many whose underneath that currently on a platform. This is a deliberate act to have an oversight over most of the public’s content in the Kingdom. Peace.

Opinion: Thabane’s end is finally here

Prime Minister Thomas Thabane is finally over, as of today, King Letsie IIII have appointed Dr. Moeketsi Majoro as his successor and has to form a new government. This is the final nail in the coffin of the political life Thabane. The king has sealed it.

So, what else can we say? Well, the former Prime Minister has enough scandals on his back. His involvement with an Foreign Envoy, who he used to gain political capital and earned fortunes with. His triangle connection to the demise and murder of his ex-wife. All of these things haven’t been answered.

This man has also used the army to stifle opposition to him. His gotten other high ranking officials into trouble, because they have investigated the Prime Minister. Thabane has used his power and tried to intimidate them.

That he haven’t answered for Xan Yie nor for the murder of Lipolelo Thabane. These allegations and investigations needs to finalized. These sort of things shouldn’t vanish into thin air, but now that’s his out of office. He will have the ability to answer for those. Not run to Johannesburg or elsewhere in South Africa. Claim sick or ill, when the Courts are summoning him.

There is time to answer for his scandals. If he was involved or directly earning money on the legislation and connections to the Wool Industry, also if he has a stake in the mohair?

Who knows, but this man has done his part. His played with high stakes and now has to accept the burden of loosing his office. He cannot use the army nor the police to stop his enemies. This man cannot use power and intimidation anymore.

Thabane is done in office. The King has said so and ordered his end. The Prime Minister has misused the office. His even most likely involved in the murder of his ex-wife. There is nothing this man would do. If it didn’t benefit him.

That why he just recently ordered the army to the streets and arrested peers. So, they couldn’t touch him. Now, the King has demoted him. His time is up.

A PM who wanted to move mountains, but lost it all. Power corrupts and this man lost it all in his greed. This man did it and that’s why scandals has hit him. However, its been all self serving and therefore, his demise isn’t sad. Its more a reality check and an balancing act, which in the end ensured his fall.

PM Thabane will not be remembered for his legislation, nor his years in office. However, he will be remembered for running away from the law, misusing his office and his questionable friends. Peace.

Lesotho: The Prime Minister who wanted to move mountains

Prime Minister Thomas Thabane who has already ran away from a murder case of his Ex-Wife. A case that is not resolved in the Court. A Prime Minister who yesterday lost another court case in the Constitutional Court. Where his order to prorogue the Parliament was nullified. There was also reports of the arrested of Police Commissioner Holomo Molibeli.

This is all in connection with the court case pending the murder trial, one that the PM surely working hard to get forgotten and dismissed too. That is why he has arrested the Police Commissioner who ordered and ensured the case had life.

What we also seeing is during the lockdown the army has been put into the streets. The army has been ordered to remain order and restore institutions. This is happening as the PM is losing in Courts. That is surely an open challenge to the rule of law and his authority.

Since the PM can order as the Executive and Head of State could order the army to this. That is why eyewitnesses saw rmy commander Mojalefa Letsoela arrest Commissioner Molibeli. This is all because the PM is entrenched.

We know that the PM has no issues to take life and try to get away with it. That is why he has no trouble ordering the army to seal his deal. He wants to keep power and not be troubled by anyone. That is why its easier to intimidate the public with the soldiers on the street and the ones who abide by laws. Will get into trouble, because the laws is only an obstacle, but someone who does whatever it takes to get what he wants

PM Thabane has no scruples. He will use all means to have power and apparently misuse it for personal gains. This is the day after the loss in Courts. He had to order the soldiers and arrest an enemy. A enemy which is there to secure the operation of the Police. That says a lot of mind of Thabane.

The Prime Minister will move mountains, he will make them dance, but only for his glory. The PM has only his self interest and his gains out of this. These actions made is to silence and stop the ones questioning his involvement in the murder of his ex-wife. This is not done, because he wants to secure institutions nor the rule of law. If he believed in rule of law, he would have showed up and answer for the evidence in the trial of the ex-wife. Which he has deflected by all means possible.

He will play sick and aloof, but now in office his fresh enough to order the soldiers on the streets of Lesotho. That is the sort of man and his behaviour only amplifies his motives, which is not for the greater good, but only selfish interests. Peace.
