“Whoever believed in Hamdok, Hamdok is gone, and whoever believed in the revolution, the revolution is alive and does not die” (Resistance Committee, 02.01.2022).
The timing of the resignation of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok is too late and with the Political (Declaration) Agreement of 21st November 2021, which ended his special place and role in Sudanese politics. As the Prime Minister accepted the fate and sold his integrity to the army commanders of the Transitional Sovereign Council, which did the second coup d’etat on the 25th October 2020. Therefore, the resignation on the 2nd January does little to nothing now.
Hamdok came in as one of the technocrats from the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) in 2019. He was one of them, but the possible power and his office became to important. That’s why he traded his integrity and morality for a second short stint in office. Which he would be the puppet and the face of the Sovereign Council to the world. That is now gone and not shockingly. Since, there been talks of his resignation from around 21st December 2021. This has been in the works for about two weeks now.
The FFC and Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) have not abandoned the revolution or the ideals. As the Resistance Councils doesn’t need or see the value of Hamdok. It is the International Community and the donors of the Sudanese government who does. They have lost the “civilian” face of the transitional government. That is the reality here… and Hamdok went away from the FFC and SPA when he signed the declaration in November 2020.
Hamdok accepted the Transitional Military Council members of Al-Burhan and Hemeti. These men got the carrot and they could hit him with a stick. It is not like the army or the armed officers has been relenting their violence against civilians after the Political Agreement. No, they have continued to murder civilians on the streets and let people die for the democratic rights. Which, the army commanders don’t want to give them.
Al-Burhan and Hemeti must have felt victorious when they got that deal. As they have deliberately shunned and ensured the FFC not having a place in the Sovereign Council after the second coup. That is surely to stop the transition and the agreements of 2019, which is vastly different from what Hamdok agreed upon in November 2020. Therefore, the army commanders got the win for nothing.
Now, they have lost the face of government. The army commanders and the militia leaders who is now apart of the Sovereign Council isn’t representative of the general public. That’s why the Resistance Councils are able to coordinate and continue it’s demonstrations across the republic. While the harsh use of force, tear-gas and violence against citizens continues. There is no stop of bloodshed from the authorities, they are even going after people inside hospitals and using all tools to suppress the public.
I don’t see the Resistance Committees, FFC and SPA will need or see value in Hamdok. The ones doing that is the IC and the ones who believed in his reforms, which the army commanders doesn’t believe in. That is very clear and the current regime is as vicious and insincere as the Al-Bashir one. That is the henchmen of the previous one and they are not willing to buckle. However, we all know at one point the centre will not hold. Nevertheless, we don’t know when that is occurring… Peace.
