“Burkina Faso: The arrest of Colonel-Major Célestin Simporé, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, leader of the attempted coup proven yesterday evening September 26, 2023…officers arrested, others on the run” (Moctar Ould Cheine, 28.09.2023).
“Coup attempt: here are the faces of the unworthy sons of Africa (from left to right)
– Lieutenant-Colonel Cheick Hamza OUATTARA, commander of the Special Gendarmerie Legion, arrested.
– Captain Christophe Maïga, second in command of the Special Intervention Unit, arrested
– Lieutenant Boubacar Keita, director general of the Higher Institute of Civil Protection Studies (ISEPC), arrested.
– Sekou Ouedraogo, former DGA of ISEPC, on the run (photo not received).
– Abdoul Aziz Aouoba, the commander of the Burkinabè Special Forces, arrested (photo not received)” (LeaderNewsCI, 28.09.2023).
Captain Ibrahim Traoré and the Mouvement patriotique pour la sauvegarde et la restauration (MPSR) is meeting hostile responses from the Army. That’s why the news of a tentative coup d’etat against him.
The current Interim President has only been in power since September 2022, which means his MSPR is ticking 1 years in office. Lieutenant Colonel Damiba who was deposed by Traoré only ruled the nation from January to September in 2022. Therefore, the current one has had longer longevity than him.
However, I wouldn’t dance of joy over that. The current junta government are having serious trouble. Especially, when you see who they are arresting and who is on the run. This is high ranking officers within the army. A government run by the army and not by civilian technocrats. Meaning these titles and offices means a lot more. These are the ones that are supposed to follow ranks and command. The chain of command has been violated and a mutiny was brewing.
A mutiny that would lead up to a coup d’etat. These got caught in the scheme and with plans. As they had ambition like Damiba did and Traoré himself did. They wanted to copy and become the statesmen too. However, they are now seen as treasonous. Even if the current interim President should be careful with that sentiment. Because, it wasn’t that long ago he thought and did the same. In all practicality his one of them, but the difference is …. he succeeded and overcame Damiba…
Clearly everyone aren’t believing in his vision or his interim government. That’s why others are seeking to replicate what he did. This shows that the current leadership have to handle things with caution and be alert. Since they can easily be targeted by an intervention from within. Which means the story of Damiba could be the future of Traoré.
One coup opens grounds for another coup. When someone is able to do it. Then the next one wants to try as well. The pay-off is so grand and the perks of office is so bountiful. That’s why I don’t blame these people. They saw and see how Traoré is living these days. The putschist wants the same and knew this was the way to do it.
This is a ghost and method that will haunt Traoré. Theses sorts of acts and schemes can make him paranoid and go crazy. That’s the worry that he looses focus and becomes self-centred about keeping power. If that happens… then the whole mission of his coup is lost. We never know… but time will tell. Peace.
