Opinion: Was there an averted coup attempt in the DRC?

While calling on the military and police to denounce all those who seek to incite them to join the enemy, Army General Christian Tshiwewe insisted on better collaboration between the army and the police in order to protect the Congolese population: “The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Congolese National Police, we have an obligation to honour the uniforms we wear. We must respect our missions, those of defending the territorial integrity of our country, of protecting the population and its property.” He called on the Congolese military and police to honour their motto: “Never betray the Congo”. The army boss revealed that army officers as well as police officers were “arrested, in Lubumbashi, in Haut-Katanga. The latter are in Kinshasa for treason.”” (Radio Okapi – ‘Kinshasa: General Tshiwewe calls on the military and police “not to betray Congo”’ 15.04.2024).

Yesterday’s revelation of Army General Christian Tshiwewe is telling. This is a warning and shows there is a storm brewing from within. The idea that army commanders and police officers are conspiring against the state. That is plot to overthrow and grab power.

When the army calls their action “treason”. Treason is to work against the state and conspire against the authorities and the current leadership. This is why Gen. Tshiwewe talks loudly about what they did. These people will be arraigned in the Courts and their cases will be tested. However, it is a signal and is a sign.

When army commanders and police officers are willing to do so… then you know things are dire and bad. When these people believe they can take action and make difference. That they can make a plot, a plan and possibly overthrow the current government. That’s what treason is…

President Tshisekedi should be careful about this, as he needs loyalty and an army that works in tandem with the government. As there is enough conflict and dangers in the Republic. He doesn’t needs insiders working from dismantling his power from within. That’s what could have happened here.

You don’t arrest and detain people for “treason” over nothing. That isn’t an accusation you should take lightly. This is telling of their actions and what they conspired to do. That’s why the President and his allies has to figure out ways to build confidence and protocol to ensure a safeguard of national ethos, which the army should defend. Therefore, the leaders of Kinshasa has to show what they are about and where they want to go…

A revelation like this shouldn’t be put out as hearsay. No one should be charged for treason over “he says, she says”. It should be done with reason and with evidence. That’s why this is a serious case and matters. If it is a ploy to clean the slate and install own army commanders. Then the Tshisekedi regime is out of hand and it will bite off more than it can chew. However, both things can be possibly…

This is a case we have to follow and what other intelligence that is revealed later. As Tshisekedi and his allies handles this. As well, as what is coming out of the court case. Because there is a need for meat on the bone. Not just quick and brief talk from one General. Peace.
