“Without details, there is no opposition, but there is employment abroad, and you can ask the people will answer you, as the struggle and armed struggle of the people over the years created a state of cohesion and solidarity, and created a political and cultural situation that guarantees the unity of the people, even if there are differences in some opinions are not opposition, but a point of view taken for the benefit, but unfortunately the opposition has become a fashion from which some groups in some countries make a living” – President Isaias Afewerki (14.11.2023).
Well, there is a reason why there is no offices of other political parties than the PFDJ in Asmara. That’s because it’s done by law and if you dare to challenge it. Then your life is on the line and there been known political assassinations and if not… people fleeing to exile for having political beliefs, which isn’t fitting with PIA or the President for Life, Afewerki.
This isn’t new and its well known in many circles, that’s why the Home Office Assessment of Eritrea in the 2000 could write this about the State of Eritrea.
Just take a look!
“An effective ban on other political groups has operated since the EPLF took power in 1991. The ELF factions have maintained that hundreds of political prisoners have remained in detention. 26 members of the ELF-RC were detained in Ethiopia in 1994 and other ELF-RC members were reportedly returned forcibly to Eritrea” (…) “Opposition to the PFDJ Government continued in the late 1990s, mainly from disaffected Eritreans resident abroad. Radio broadcasts on the clandestine `Voice of Free Eritrea’ radio station, apparently broadcasting from Sudan from in late 1997, claimed to represent the Eritrean National Alliance, a group of Eritrean opposition organisations formed in Khartoum in late 1996” (Eritrea Assessment – Country Information and Policy Unit, April 2000).
That’s why there are non known opposition in Eritrea. It is done deliberately and that’s why it has to start in the diaspora. Because, doing it within the realm of the PFDJ. It is lethal and dangerous. That’s like asking for a death-wish and anyone with a pulse, tends to avoid that…
That’s why the Organization of Eritrean Unity (OEU) is most likely a diaspora outfit. Not that I want to forget to mention the Eritrean Movement for Democracy & Human Rights (EMDHR), Eritrean Bright Future Movement, Eritrean Afar National Congress or the Global Yiaki Movement are all based from the outside. Therefore, there are existing opposition, but not from within. Without a shadow of a doubt, there is more of them, but this is just to mention a few…
The President did say that and tried to do it with a point. However, it isn’t that clever when you have banned it and made it illegal. When it is life-threatening and you are a living target for associating or participating in opposition activities. That’s the gist of it all and the ones who do… are risking their lives. Because, the PFDJ doesn’t’ value their lives when they have crossed the “rubicon”.
The “unity” the President speaks of is “fear, intimidation and authorities knocking on people’s doors”. This President is surreal talking about it. A man who has only held one referendum and never ever allowed the voices of the people to heard ever since. That’s the sort of “unity” and civic duty he has entrusted on the people. If he did trust them and had confidence. He would have declared polls and campaigned, but he knows that isn’t possible… or feasible for that matter.
He is the overlord and everyone else is just bound to follow him. That’s who PIA is and everyone should know. Peace.
