Tchad: Is the Field Marshal safe tonight? Was this a coup attempt?

Gunfire heard this evening around the Toumaï palace, seat of the presidency. Heavy weapons fire was heard from 7:45 p.m. near the Toumaï Palace, the seat of the Presidency of the Republic. The situation remains confusing, but several ministers have taken to social media to reassure the population and affirm that everything is under control” (Toumaï Web Médias, 08.01.2025)

There is uncertainty in the air as the Toumai Palace is under gun-fire. There are reports of being under control, but hard to verify at the very moment. The Republic with dozens of Generals and a junta government inherited by Field Marshal Mahamat Kaka Déby Itno. That one is now in for a shocker or a revelation.

Speculation of French involvement has come fast. As the Government has asked for the French troops to leave the nation. There are parts of their deployed troops that has left, but they just recently gotten a deadline to the end of the month, 31st January 2025. Therefore, speculations becomes rapid in times like these. Especially, when Paris is known for installing and supporting fellow puppet leaders in their former colonies. To see that in N’Djamena wouldn’t be shocking or surprising either.

The other reports is that the loyalist army stood by the Field Marshal and stopped the barrage of bullets tonight. Meanwhile we don’t know who is the intruders or who are behind the armed group that attacked the Toumai Palace tonight.

The authorities and the state has been reluctant and not forthcoming with intelligence or any sort of verified information. Neither about the reason for tonight’s efforts or who is behind the attempted coup d’etat.

The role of Field Marshal in Tchad is a dangerous one. The decision to put himself on the pedestal has already cost him. His now a target and people aims for the throne. That is obvious now. We can just wonder who did it and for what reason. Certainly it wasn’t for democratic values or for betterment of the Republic. Most likely done for selfish reasons and the wants of control. As they know the state is run by individuals and not by institutions. That’s why they went for the Field Marshal and no one else.

Some says this was a coordinated attack by Boko Haram. Other that it was warning shots shot at a vehicle even. Secondly, we cannot assess it right now. We have to await more information and the state has to sufficiently release that intelligence. As we don’t know and cannot know right now.

Should we be worried about the Field Marshal or be calmly await tomorrows verdict? Because this smell bad and the lack of official response doesn’t make it better. Meanwhile we have to wait in uncertainty and more speculations will appear. Which only feeds fire to the flame.

Silence isn’t what people need. They need the truth and some sort of report of what went down tonight at the Toumai Palace. Peace.

Opinion: The 2 minutes that made Brig. Gen. Robert Freeman Mugabe famous

Brigadier General Robert Freeman Mugabe yesterday decided to publicly arrest in the middle of the General Court Martial in Makindye, the attorney and advocate Eron Kiiza to 9 months detention in Kitalya Prison. That was done within two minutes, there was no test or any challenge to it. Only a direct Court Order and the legal professional was behind bars after a violent manhandling within the chamber. Therefore, the Brigadier General will be historical for this action alone.

The General Court Martial (GCM) of Makindye will linger on forever now. It has a stained history already before the Brigadier General was in-charge. Not like his the first one to deliver judgement of impunity and ill-advised sentences on civilians. Because that has been a staple in the reign of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. That’s why the President supports this sort of Military Tribunal to punish his opponents. Therefore, he will be happy with what happened yesterday.

It is just ironic that a man named “Freeman” is doing this to fellow citizens. His a serving member of the state and a custodian of law. Alas, he doesn’t value the law or cares about the rule of law. No, his only there to serve the interests of the President and those who has power. Now the Brigadier General will be named and shamed for his recent decision.

It is hard to imagine how 2 minutes of your life can be so significant. However, in the life of the Brigadier General it will be detrimental. This is his legacy and how he will be remembered. The army commander will remembered as the henchman of the tyrant. That he issued the orders of the tyranny and was diligently a servant of the tyrant himself. This is who Brig. Gen. Freeman Mugabe is now.

Within two minutes time his whole name, reputation and what his known for is sealed for life. It doesn’t matter what choices he makes or what sort of things he does next. This is who he is and what has become of him. That is the person and the reflection of his character to the whole Republic.

Robert Freeman Mugabe has made his decision and this is what we will remember him for. It is really astonishing that people are willing and abiding by this sort of leadership. That someone wants to use their lives and be a component in the stead of the dictator. This is who this man is and what has become of him. A man of such stature and title should be more reflective, but that was too much to ask. Peace.
