Burundi: The authorities mass arrest doctors over pleas for betterment of their salaries

“In this regard, the FNSS, the National Federation of Health Workers’ Unions (FNSS), led by Mélance HAKIZIMANA, issued a statement on 05/02/2025 condemning the mass arrests of doctors across the country. The FNSS reported that they were aware of the mass arrests of doctors across the country, and the detention of 5 doctors at the police headquarters in Bujumbura. They expressed their regret that these doctors are being imprisoned while they are demanding a salary increase and demanding a salary is not a crime, and they believe that this problem will never end because demanding a salary has always existed and will always exist. In the statement, the FNSS expresses its regret at the way in which these doctors were arrested and charged with the crime of undermining national security because they were arrested arbitrarily while none of them was ever sent a summons to appear and refuse to appear, and they request that these doctors be released immediately and without further ado” (King Umurundi Freedom, 06.02.2025).

The Conseil National pour la Défense de la Démocratie–Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie (CNDD-FDD) government are showing its true face. The Burundian authorities are now going after the doctors who has decided to voice out their grievances and their lacking salaries.

The state and authorities should look into why the doctors are speaking out. They are voicing their struggling day to day life. The crisis from within and how the government aren’t able to serve them. The doctors as civil servants need proper salaries and be paid for their services. They don’t need to be criminalized and penalized for speaking out about it. Neither should another civil servants’ group in the Republic.

This is a failure of the CNDD-FDD and their methods of suppression. Instead of listening and trying to find a way out of it. They are instead ordering mass arrests and silencing them. That won’t solve anything, and the crisis isn’t over. The same pleas will come from others who aren’t apprehended yet.

This is a mistake and shows the vile force and misuse of power by the government. They have instruments and tools of government to help the doctors out. That is what the state could have done. They have abilities and have ways to push policies that would give the doctors a better salary. That’s what is needed…

The state has forgotten its function and think it can arrest development. This isn’t governing but silencing its own. That isn’t going forwards but walking backwards. Peace.
