“Whether Kyagulanyi likes it or not, I’m not leaving Parliament. How will I survive yet I spent my 2 years in jail?” – Allan Ssewanyana (15.10.2025).
After the National Unity Platform (NUP) decided to field Zahrah Luyirika as the flagbearer for the Makindye West constituency. That has been controversial as she stood for and contested for Kampala Women MP and not this electoral office. Therefore, the NUP EMC has a questionable view here…
Makindye West will be a battle between the NUP and their independents, as there are two former NUP leaders who will also stand tall in the General Elections. This being incumbent NUP MP Allan Ssewanyana who lost the ticket. Secondly, was David Mushiri who has lost twice and stood down for Ssewanyana in 2021.
“Good morning, fellow Ugandans. We appreciate the support you gave to the National Unity Platform and particularly our President, Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, as he toured the Eastern region. We are grateful and pledge our full allegiance. Wishing you a blessed Sunday, Makindye West” (Rt Hon Maala Zahrah Luyirika, 05.10.2025).
We are speaking of the NUP and the NUP leaning MP candidates in this election. Because no one will really care about the National Resistance Movement and their flagbearer Doreen Keita. She will have nothing to say or be substantial in the race. It would be better for her to continue her day-job and not vie for this office. Doreen won’t have a chance and won’t even be a footnote at the end of the polls. No, she is wasting her time, and everyone knows it.
The ones that have a chance here are the ones aligned with NUP and has tried to become their flagbearer ahead of the polls. These are the ones who has a possibility to gain popularity and be viable on the ballot. The rest will just fill the list and be there, but no one ever thinks they can win it.
This will be a Ssewanyana versus Luyirika but with the third-wheeler Mushiri. Ssewanyana is the one with the most to lose. His the incumbent and already risking his place in the party. Now he challenges the party and their choice of successor. However, Mushiri is the one that is outplayed twice and now is running independent, yet again.
The independents of Ssewanyana and Mushiri will split the opposition. Meanwhile, Ssewanyana has the name and the know-how. This is for him to lose. The NUP can look foolish picking Luyirika over him. That can be the narrative, and they wonder why she got it to begin with. When the party has the likes of Ssewanyana and they had an agreement with Mushiri to after the 2021 election. Therefore, that man should feel betrayed, as he was waiting, but he also went independent last time too…
We will follow Makindye West constituency. That’s one of the hot-spots and will have all the eyes on it. As this is a place where the NUP can either overcome their own decisions or live to regret it. This depends on the will of the people and who they see most fit. Peace.
