Opinion: The Slaughterhouse as we knew it is now gone

XXL March 2011 Front Page

Today KXNG Crooked and Joell Ortiz dropped ‘The Rise and Fall of Slaughterhouse’ which didn’t include the other Slaughterhouse MCs Joe Budden or Royce Da 5’9”. Therefore, we easily state that the 4 artists will not drop any serious project anytime soon.

We know that Royce is in his mojo and dropping separate projects as a solo artist. Joe Budden is buys with his podcast and network. While Joell Ortiz have dropped projects steadily. The same can be said about KXNG Crooked. They have all worked separately … but has consistently teamed up on various of projects.

That’s why we can after this week and the fall-out after that with certainty say Slaughterhouse will not be revived or have an anniversary tour. The group as an entity seems dead. Even if Royce or Joe has acted differently about it. Since, they by all means are allowed to feel invested and part of it. That is legit, but at the same time… they haven’t tried or carried anything for years. At least how it looks like now to the fans, which I am.

I bought the first Slaughterhouse album, which was released independent and the Shady Records “Welcome to Our House”. That’s because I was initially a fan of Royce and Crooked I. These two had history and dropped projects, which I bumped back in the day. Some of those records I play to this day. Therefore, I got introduced to Joell and Joe Budden.

I never cared for Joe Budden and his rhymes. That is just the way it is, but because of Slaughterhouse. I started look into his discography and his later his albums, which he released like “All Love Lost” or “Rage Against the Machine”. While I have become a fan of Joell Ortiz, because of the group and now enjoys plenty of his albums.

That’s the value of this group. It galvanized the ones who was already popular and had a fanbase, but also got more people looking into it. I knew about Joell because he had signed to Aftermath at one point, but hadn’t really heard his music. Only read about him in passing the XXL Magazine. So, that proves the value of joining forces. That should be a lesson for other s in the future.

A group like this has an exponential potential not because of the names alone. It has superior possibilities and can advance their career. I am certain that I wouldn’t care or have listened to Budden or Joell, if it wasn’t for Slaughterhouse.

So with today’s release of the ‘Rise and Fall of the Slaughterhouse’ only cements the end of the group and the option of further releases. As we know Joe Budden isn’t on the mic for other reasons than bitch on the industry on his podcast. Royce is comfortable in his own solo career and with the recent success. While the two others can work together and prosper, but they will not become a new Slaughterhouse. No, they will just be KXNG Crooked and Joell Ortiz. These two are fantastic on the mic and can drop bars. However, they are the not the game-changer or the rappers who conquers the charts like that.

Let’s be clear, Joe Budden is an initiator and instigator. No matter how you put it and his the ones that burns bridges in Def Jam and Shady Records. He wasn’t even planning to honour his deal with Shady. So, it is clear from the get-go that he would be a troublemaker, which we have seen time and time again. He expect people to work and be loyal to him blindly, but himself has to have the upper-hand and get all the benefits of a deal. Like his more worth than the group. That’s how it looks to me. Yes, Royce played along, but they have all focused on own careers and this has become a back-burner.

That’s why we know the drill and the studio will not be filled with these gentlemen. That Joe Budden speaks of how he would “murder” and be “danger” on the mic. I don’t believe him. Last time he tried to instigate things, Drake didn’t even catch the memo or care about his bars. It was even more silent and less concerned than Nelly was back in the day KRS-One dropped his diss-record. Therefore, Budden is a bit high on his own supply.

Alas… we can all be safe to say. These gentlemen will not reunite or drop anything significant together. They are not in that head-space or searching for that project. These has moved on and their resolve is different. Some got more out of it and other found new paths after. That’s why we know that is done.

The ones hoping for Glass House. Some people are still waiting for Dr. Dre’s “Detox” and I expect the same fate over this one. We are lucky if Crooked and Royce can drop their joint records together. If Royce can be a big man and understand the hurt of Crooked too. Unless, the ego is to huge and he cannot overcome that. Since, we have seen how “hurt” and “pained” he has acted on IG during the last week. Therefore, it is hard to know, if these tracks will ever see the day.

So here we are… in a juxtaposition and we are ending up nowhere. The group left Shady, but they all signed out too. Some tried to find deals and avenues for releases, but the drive and edge to do so… wasn’t really there and that’s why we ended up getting the half-way project today. No one should be happy about this.

Still, this shows why communication, relationship and the brutal truth is needed. They are built with different teams and motivations. These MCs had their interests and their visions for this. Nevertheless, seemingly some of them felt it was unfulfilled, while others hoped for a final project. That’s why we are here and not anywhere else. Peace.

A review of the ‘Rise and Fall of Slaughterhouse’: The Roll-Out and the Album itself all in 1

The roll-out of the joint album by KXNG Crooked and Joell Ortiz ‘Rise and Fall of Slaughterhouse’ is finally over. There been releases of singles like “Vacancy” and “Backstage” which set the tone. The other members of Slaughterhouse got into their feelings and said they even felt “hurt”. This being Joe Budden and Royce Da 5’9”. These has gone wild on IG Live, interviews and even on own podcast twice. So, there is certainly pieces crushed … and certainly amplified the egos of all the members.

These two has gone off at the other MCs of the group, which haven’t dropped a major project since “Welcome To Our House” in 2012 on Shady Records. Since then we the fans has waited for an infamous project named “Glass House”, which would have been the third instalment from the group. Alas, we are now a decade later and we have a joint venture between 50% of the group.

The album is clear in the bar-for-bar and tells their story. However, this one isn’t going in deep. It is touching the end of Slaughterhouse. While Crook and Joell made it seems like they would bury the group and tell deep unknown stories of the group. Yes, there are joints that speaks of the loss, the costs and the lack of movement of the group.

The beats are fine and dandy. The two MCs are seasoned rappers and can drops puns like nothing. They are proving their ability and why they are respected word-smiths. Still, the album should have told more, but they were maybe acting with some caution. As they still see Royce and Budden as brothers. That would make sense?

The roll-out made it seem like it was deeper and would be the closure of the chapter. This is just giving snippets of it and not digging deeper into the reasons of the lack of any albums from Slaughterhouse.

We know the Slaughterhouse was a powerhouse and a promising group that had a shot to be fantastic. The two MCs on this album proves their skills and ability to write rhymes. These two proves that on the album. Still, they are not saying things we haven’t heard before. Yes, Joell are straight and feels betrayed by certain members, that they we’re his brother. That is proven by “Coastin’” by them both.

We clearly hearing the stories of how Joe Budden thinks his bigger than the rest of group. That story is coming out. As well, as Royce who didn’t want to move either. We don’t know if that is all true, but that’s the narrative the Two MCs are spinning. This is not shocking, as they have told similar things in advance.

While the “Still In My Feelings” feels like an upgraded version of the intro to Joell Ortiz “In My Feelings” from Autograph. So, this is a joint that Ortiz already has published and verse he has released twice with only adding Crooked onto it. That was a bit weak of a man like Joell. This is re-issuing what you have released and put it on a joint album…

Look Mama” is the natural track of MCs who has made it and wants to give thanks to their mother. It is a nice joint and shows how the two went from poverty into riches. What it also shows their grateful words to their mothers. This is a nice track, but on a farewell of Slaughterhouse seems like an add on.

The end “Sorry” fits the “Coastin’”, “Backstage”, “Fukglasshouse” and “Vacancy” which all fits the pattern of ending it. While there are other tracks that doesn’t goes that deep. The production is tight. The beats are fitting the moods and the verses.

It is a well-built album. This album was made to seem to be a total closure of Slaughterhouse. The House was forclosed and the logo was even burned in the “Vacancy” music-video. However, it seems more like a moment of airing out some grievances, but not going really hard at it. The two made sure not to bury all bridges or throw to many punches. It is not like they tried to “Second Round K.O” or “Vaseline” it. The intent was clear not to make diss-tracks or brutally assault the other members.

However, it is short of stories and of further reflection on the matter. It has some sound-bites and some cuts, which can spark tension between the members. Nevertheless, it is not too deep or reflected. The album isn’t filled with bars that could envision or be able to tell another narrative. Than the stories, which was already out there.

That’s why the promise of closure and end is sort of still out there. This here is a beginning of an end, but not the final one. Not in my perspective as a fan and a listener. Who has enjoyed albums and projects from all four in the Slaughterhouse. That’s why I wanted more out of this here. The tracks that wasn’t about Slaughterhouse directly could have been leftover tracks from “H.A.R.D” for all I know. So, they just traded this and made it a full LP.

Still, this is an album for any rap and hip hop fan. Especially, the ones that has followed Slaughterhouse and the MCs associated with that. I will not consider this one a classic or such. It tells a story, shows the skills of the two, but it is not whole. Neither does it seem to poignant enough. Which is sad… because they could, but then they would totally destroy any chance of friends, collaborations or even being considered associates with the other two. That’s why I think they didn’t go all in or wrote rhymes that could spark a full out beef. Because, they just want to shed a light on why there haven’t been a release of any album since 2012. Peace.

Ukraine: Putin says Ukraine prepared to attack Belarus [and Russia can survive sanctions like the USSR]

If they hadn’t done this (a special operation in Ukraine. – Ed.) a day before, believe me, in a few days we would have drunk all this cup with huge losses. They were not only preparing to strike at the Donbass – they built positions for strike on Belarus” (RIA Novosti – ‘Putin announced positive developments in negotiations with Ukraine’ 11.03.2022).

On the 16th Day of the Russian-Belorussian invasion of the Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin had a visit of Belarus President Alexander Lukaschenko. Where these quotes has been released to Russian media, as way of narrating a story and selling the reasons for the war. Alas, the “special operation” which is a modified conflict and making it seem less severe.

However, we do know what is happening, the reports of casualties, deaths and harm, which is inflicted on Ukraine is vast. While Putin make it seem all reasonable, which is it not. He now makes a story where the Ukrainian army was supposed to attack Belarus now. After 16 days of invasion. That just shows what he is willing to do and further his agenda here. There is no where he will go and we knew the Russian armies had stationed battalions and where ready for war inside Belarus in the weeks before. Therefore, the Russian President is out of line saying this, but it just follows a pattern of making up excuses and reasons for using their means to invade Ukraine.

Later in the talks with President Lukaschenko he talks of the sanctions, which he has described like this:

The USSR really lived under the conditions of sanctions, developed and achieved tremendous success. <…> Even after 1990, sanctions against Russia were preserved and then moved into new and modern times from the time of the Soviet Union” (RIA Novosti – ‘Putin announced positive developments in negotiations with Ukraine’ 11.03.2022).

The Soviet and the USSR is very important to Putin. That’s why the sphere of the USSR is vital for his interests and power. He needs to galvanize that period and install that in the memory of the current civilians. As he wants to extol that and exhilarate that at an amp speed. Where the Russian Federation is trying to take the former Republic’s under the wings.

Putin is clearly just making smoke and mirrors. All sorts of excuses for it. As Belarus has supported the war from the beginning and made it possible to attack Ukraine from a broader spectrum than just the bordering regions of Russia. Alas, Putin knows this very well, but needs to vilify Ukraine, which he does as much as he can.

Nobody should be surprised, he uses all means, panic and propaganda to defend his reasons to invade. He will fight his inner demons and ghosts of the past, which is the reason for it happening in the first place. Ukraine is the victim, because the Russian President wants more power and have real influence in Kyiv. Something that has withered with time. Now in 2022 he needs excuses to execute it and making up stuff to legitimizing furthering Belorussian participation in it. Peace.

Sudan: Forces of Freedom and Change – Statement on the crimes of the coup d’état against the peaceful marches of March 10 and civilians in Mount Mon (11.03.2022)

Our brave people;

The victorious processions of March 10, 2022, were met with brutality and violence, as the forces of the coup d’état proceeded to harness their live ammunition and purchased tear gas canisters.

From the pockets of taxpayers and from the levies that are imposed on our rebellious people who are suffering very complicated economic conditions, two martyrs rose to prayer for them with prayers for mercy and forgiveness, and dozens of revolutionaries and free revolutionaries were injured, we ask God for their speedy recovery.

The Jebel Moon region in West Darfur has also witnessed brutal attacks on unarmed citizens that began since last Sunday and is still continuing, which, according to a statement issued by the West Darfur State Doctors Committee, claimed dozens of deaths and injuries, in a continuation of the violent incidents that the region witnessed since November of the year last.

The authority in Khartoum did not move towards what is happening there.

Our great people;

We in the Executive Office of the Forces of Freedom and Change appreciate the astonishing courage of our people in resisting the arrogance of the brutal coup authority, and we see that the justifications for defeating the putschists, opportunists and remnants of the former regime have become full-fledged, and that the overthrow of their worn-out authority and the crushing victory of aspirations, our honourable people are looming on the horizon, and despite our appreciation for the efforts of the African Union and the United Nations envoy to find solutions to get the Sudanese scene out of the state of acute political tension created by the coup of the twenty-fifth of October 2022 AD, the reality of the situation confirms that the coup authority does not care about calls to create the climate, which puts a question mark about the fate of these efforts and initiatives, and we affirm that we are on the path to achieving the goals and noble aspirations of our people in defeating totalitarianism, overthrowing the October 25 coup, and completing the process of civil democratic transformation under a purely civil authority.

Long live our people free and victorious

Ukraine: President Zelensky’s important message on Day 16 of the invasion

We have already reached a strategic turning point. We are already moving towards our goal, our victory” (…) We need time, patience, our wisdom, energy, we need to do our job to the best of our abilities” (…) “Ukrainians are proud people who always defend their land, and will not give the occupier a single piece of this land, not a single percent of their freedom” (…) “If this continues, then sanctions packages against Russia are not enough, and I expect — we are already working on this today — new sanctions from our partners” (…) “Russia must pay for this terrible war, pay daily” (…) “A humanitarian catastrophe are two words that have become fully synonymous with the other two words, the Russian Federation” – Presidenet Volodymyr Zelensky (The Kyiv Independent, 11.03.2022).

Today is the 16th Day of the Russian-Belorussian invasion of Ukraine. President Zelensky is speaking of what is happening and he will of Ukraine. The Ukrainian President is showing the world and being the voice of the Republic, which is defending itself heroically. They are able to stop and block the advances of the Russian forces.

However, in a war there isn’t only the destruction and devastating ramification hitting the font-lines and the battlegrounds. No, these are coming home and places of security becomes scarce. There is clear evidence of civilian casualties and people being harmed. Public buildings being bombed, schools, universities, museums and kindergartens even. No, place is safe from the missiles, bombs and artillery fire towards the towns and cities of Ukraine. The Russian forces don’t mind the damage and suffering, as it is done to an enemy.

The UN States this very clearly today…

We remain gravely concerned by the rising death toll and human suffering in Ukraine and call for an immediate end to the attacks. We have so far recorded 549 civilian deaths and 957 injuries since the armed attack began on 24 February, although the actual figure could be much higher. Civilians are being killed and maimed in what appear to be indiscriminate attacks, with Russian forces using explosive weapons with wide area effects in or near populated areas. These include missiles, heavy artillery shells and rockets, as well as airstrikes. Schools, hospitals, and kindergartens have been hit – with hugely devastating consequences. On 3 March, 47 civilians were killed when Russian airstrikes hit two schools and several apartment blocks in Chernihiv. On 9 March, a Russian airstrike hit Mariupol Hospital No.3 injuring at least 17 civilians. We are still investigating reports that at least three civilians may have been killed in the airstrike. We spoke to different sources in Mariupol, including local authorities, indicating consistently that the hospital was both clearly identifiable and operational when it was hit” (UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights – ‘Press briefing notes on Ukraine, 11 March 2022’ 11.03.2022).

The words of President Zelensky is powerful and inspirational. It is in the midst of need. That he asks the world to punish the ones who make his nation suffer. This is easy to grasp and understand, as his Republic is battling the Russians and their armed forces. They are bombing from the sky and attacking them on several fronts. The damage, the pain and suffering is happening on continuing basis. There is no stop of plights and heartache.

The Ukrainian are getting assaulted and facing the worst sort of brutality, as citizens are fleeing and others are behind to defend the Republic. The invader is here and they have no heart. They are only in it to get the Ukrainians to surrender and take over Kyiv. That’s what Putin and Kremlin is up too now.

Zelensky is right: “Russia must pay for this terrible war”. Not only the ammunition, the loss of lives and the current sanctions, but they need to feel the pinch and consequences of putting Ukraine in this here place. It shouldn’t get over with without a price and cost. The Russians has to pay a price and it should ensure the stagnation and ability to wage war ever again. That is a righteous cause, since Putin was willing to do this. The Republic he runs should be touched and it is. Not only symbolic, but in such a manner that the Kremlin wouldn’t dare to do this again. Peace.

South Sudan: WFP – Families pushed to the limit as South Sudan braces for its worst hunger crisis ever (11.03.2022)

South Sudan forms part of a ‘ring of fire’ encircling the globe where climate shocks, conflict, covid-19, and rising costs are driving millions closer to starvation.

JUBA, South Sudan, March 11, 2022 – More than seventy percent of the South Sudanese population will struggle to survive the peak of the lean season this year as the country grapples with unprecedented levels of food insecurity caused by conflict, climate shocks, covid, and rising costs, warned the United Nations World Food Programme today.

While global attention remains fixated on Ukraine, a hidden hunger emergency is engulfing South Sudan with about 8.3 million people in South Sudan – including refugees – set to face extreme hunger in the coming months as the 2022 lean season peaks, food becomes scarce and provisions are depleted, according to the latest findings published in the 2022 Humanitarian Needs Overview. Particularly at risk are tens of thousands of South Sudanese who are already severely hungry following successive and continuous shocks and could starve without food assistance.

South Sudan forms part of a ‘ring of fire’ encircling the globe where climate shocks, conflict, covid-19, and rising costs are driving millions closer to starvation. The impact of the climate crisis and ongoing conflict have led to large scale displacement, livelihoods losses, the destruction of arable land and crops as well as rising food prices — threatening the survival of communities living in some of the most isolated areas in the States of Jonglei, Lakes, Unity and Warrap.

“The extent and depth of this crisis is unsettling. We’re seeing people across the country have exhausted all their available options to make ends meet and now they are left with nothing,” said Adeyinka Badejo, Deputy Country Director of the World Food Programme in South Sudan.

Turning the tide on hunger

While providing critical food and nutrition assistance to meet the immediate needs of populations at risk, WFP simultaneously implements resilience building activities to help these communities cope with sudden shocks without losing all their productive assets.

“Given the magnitude of this crisis, our resources only allow us to reach only some of those most in need with the bare minimum to survive, which is not nearly enough to allow communities to get back on their feet. WFP is working tirelessly not only to cater for these immediate needs, but also to support communities to restore their own resilience and be better prepared to face new shocks,” said Badejo.

In 2021, WFP reached 5.9 million people with food and nutrition assistance, including more than 730,000 people in South Sudan who benefited from livelihoods activities.

In Greater Jonglei and Unity States, where unprecedented floods and localized conflict prevented people from reaching their cultivated fields, WFP supported people with cash assistance to buy food and other basic needs, provided communities with tools to protect and maintain critical assets, and trained young people in various vocational activities, including post-harvest management.

Somalia: Anticipatory action and timely response help avert major outbreaks and protect the most vulnerable from health effects of drought (10.03.2022)

The anticipatory action project has also supported scaling up of essential health care services, including treatment of severely malnourished children in nutrition stabilization centres across the states covered.

GENEVA, Switzerland, March 10, 2022 – Somalia has witnessed intermittent drought over the last 3 decades. Each drought, and natural catastrophe, has brought with it a string of health consequences, magnified even further in a country with fragile and vulnerable health system.

CERF support delivering anticipatory action

To respond to an impending drought situation in Somalia during May to November in 2021, WHO provided timely support to the Ministry of Health and Human Services, with funding support from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). Part of the support focused on the prevention and mitigation of the health consequences of drought through anticipatory action, while the other focused on delivering an urgent, swift response through the deployment of rapid response teams in affected districts.

Highlighting the progress made Dr Mamunur Rahman Malik, WHO Representative to Somalia and Head of Mission, said, “Our support prevented a major catastrophe when the country has still been reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic and its health system was yet to fully recover.” By considering Somalia’s previous experiences with drought, we were able to predict scenarios, prepare for, and respond to, difficult situations to save lives, and all the while offer essential primary health care services throughout the same efforts.”

Preventing and mitigating public health risks by anticipating effects of emergencies

In 2021, through the CERF anticipatory action project, WHO supported the ministries of health in Somaliland, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Jubaland and Puntland to prevent and mitigate the public health risks of drought. In 11 high-risk districts earmarked by Somalia’s Health Cluster, WHO took measures to prevent the spread of diseases, reaching 163 266 people directly, 69 635 of whom were internally displaced people (IDPs) and 81 021 were women.

The project also enabled WHO to deploy health care workers, and rapid response teams, with a view to preventing disease spread and mitigating the health effects of drought at community levels. As a result, over 1100 outbreak alerts were detected and investigated in a timely manner. By enhancing surveillance for diseases, detecting, investigating and responding to alerts early, the country was able to avert larger outbreaks of diseases from cholera, measles and other epidemic disease, save lives and reduce the health consequences of drought.

The anticipatory action project has also supported scaling up of essential health care services, including treatment of severely malnourished children in nutrition stabilization centres across the states covered.

Through this support, WHO distributed medical supplies for treatment of severe acute malnutrition, cholera, malaria and pneumonia, thereby reaching 244 250 people, who had limited access to health services, with community outreach services.

Delivering a rapid response to public health challenges

As part of the second CERF-funded rapid response project, in 2021, in collaboration with state ministries of health, WHO deployed rapid response teams and community health workers to provide an urgent, essential health response for IDPs and host communities in 9 drought-affected districts in Somaliland, Jubaland and Puntland. Through this support, WHO directly reached 123 181 Somalis, 61 573 of whom were female.

Through this project, WHO deployed 324 community health workers who visited every household in drought-affected district to, report alerts to the rapid response teams for field investigation. These community health workers reported a total 2527 epidemic alerts, including for suspected measles, cholera, malaria and respiratory tract infections. The rapid response teams that were trained and deployed in 39 districts through this project investigated 1686 of these alerts triggered from the community health workers. These interventions prevented major outbreaks in drought-affected areas. In addition, WHO’s work helped to provide essential health care to over 491 206 beneficiaries.

Communities’ needs drive project activities

In places like riverine villages where Dahawo Muse Yusuf and her family live, these interventions support Somalis to be prepared for, and respond to, public health challenges.

Sitting upright on a bed at the Jowhar Regional Hospital, Dahawo explained how her village, Raqayle Umar Gudley, is affected every time the Shabelle River swells with floods, or runs dry through a drought. This is yet another time when Dahawo and her community have not been able to harvest crops since the last deyr rains failed, she adds grimly. “We have no access to safe water and dig into the river bed to look for water sometimes,” said 20-year-old Dahawo. “I know of many people like me, from my village, who are suffering from diarrhoea due to drinking unsafe water. Once, an NGO – I can’t remember their name – gave us chlorine to clean water but that was just once.” When asked if she knew how to clean water, Dahawo chuckles and says they have not been able to discuss this issue at home, but that she would ask her husband, who is educated, to discuss with the community how to clean water to prevent diseases.

“People like Dahawo are suffering from diseases that can be prevented,” said Dr Mohamed Farah, the head clinician at the Jowhar Regional Hospital. “Many people also suffer from communicable diseases such as pneumonia, and acute watery diarrhoea, and several children are suffering from measles and severe acute malnutrition as the result of the drought. We are receiving patients from as far as Hiran and Jalaqsi. The situation is getting worse every day.”

Learning skills to prevent the spread of diseases The two CERF-funded projects reached health care workers with different skill sets. In Belet Weyne, Nimca Kalil Mohamud, a nurse working at the Eljalle Health Centre offers women support to breastfeed their babies properly, and gives advice on family planning and nutrition.

She explained that she learnt a lot about the prevention of COVID-19 and the integrated management of childhood illnesses at a capacity-building session offered by WHO and the Government through CERF in 2021.

In addition to advancing skills and knowledge, such training also motivates health workers like her to do her job better, Nimca added.

Offering primary health care services to support affected communities

In continuing to ensure humanitarian aid reaches people affected by public health crises, WHO is supporting the Ministry of Health in Somalia in 2022 to ensure a rapid response intervention to mitigate the public health risks in some of the severest drought-affected districts of Galmudug and South West State.

Under these rapid response interventions supported by CERF, the project aims to increase communities’ access to primary health care services through fixed and outreach services, including the timely detection of and swift response to alerts of epidemic-prone diseases, as well as support risk communication, community engagement and health promotion activities. These efforts will continue to protect vulnerable populations from the adverse effects of drought.
