Ethiopia: The Global Society of Tigrai Scholars (GSTS) – Urgent Appeal to End the Brutal Siege and Catastrophic Humanitarian Crisis and Atrocities Against Tigrayans (16.02.2022)

The Kampala Central MP Muhammed Nsereko lost the plot on NTV On the Spot last night. He was smoked and burned by the arguments made by lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde who was right on the money. Ssemakadde proven that wits and wisdom isn’t in titles or the office of the beholden, but of the character of a person. That’s why Nsereko couldn’t acknowledge it, because the lawyer didn’t give any moment to breathe.
I don’t feel sorry for the MP as he plans to put string on the freedom of speech, the liberty of expression and silence dissidents online. The state who already has the Computer Misuse Act with offensive communication and have the Penal Code of Article 24, which has made it forbidden to annoy, ridicule or alarm the President. Therefore, the state already has lots of stipulations, laws and regulation on media to block the unintended reports, articles, communications or messages online.
That’s why it was so vital for the lawyer to burn the bridges of Nsereko who is trying to forge his position and place within the NRM. The former rebel and “independent” MP who is as close to the NRM as you can be without being it. He is just another asset of the ruling regime and that’s why he wanted to discover and work on new legislation to silence critics.
This is the same man that has vast wealth and was at one point mentioned as the wealthiest MP in the Republic. That was said about him before the 2016 General Election in the run-up time in 2015. The MP has been in office since 2011 and been able to be reputable. While also swinging on the edges to be useful for the NRM. Therefore, his one of a few in the Buganda region that is NRM leaning in the 11th Parliament. As the People Power wave too most of the constituencies there.
However, with that in mind, the populist and the calculated fellow has outmanoeuvred himself this time. His maybe trying his Magyezi private motion and private bill sort of trick. To do the emperor a favour and shut down critics totally online.
So, you would think a third term legislator and representative would have upped his game and made valid reasons for a change or make new legislation. However, his school-yard reasoning wasn’t flying high yesterday. No, it was falling flat and he could never recover from the fall-off.
Nsereko, if his wealth of the past still exists… he will always have huge investments in Zambia to live off from in the future. Secondly, he surely has invested the millions of shillings his been earning as an MP for all these years. Not like he has to worry about the NSSF payouts with grown age. He should be covered for life with the suits, envelopes, cars and salary, which he has earned over a decade in Parliament.
This man don’t have to worry…. We all know that and Nsereko should work on his stances and arguments. You cannot outsmart someone with a suit and tie. Nsereko needs to come correct and not only a mere full of empty statements, which is pointless. That’s only working on the naive or the belligerent people in the crowds. Clearly, he has taken water over his head and cannot cannot carry the weight.
Nsereko better revise his plans and maybe adjust himself to his own expectations. As the populist and wealthy MP can only get you so far. That was proven yesterday and he now has to find a way to land softly.
If not… just linger on as a silent partner of the regime in the Parliament and hoping people forgetting until next election. Since that’s years to come and many more scandals happen before that time around. Peace.

UNMISS deployed peacekeepers proactively as well as pre-emptively, to conflict hotspots and conflict areas throughout the year.
NEW YORK, United States of America, February 18, 2022 – Reported incidents of violence against civilians fell by around 42 per cent in 2021 compared with the previous year, according to a new report released by the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Thursday.
The UNMISS Human Rights Division’s annual brief on violence affecting civilians, documented 3,414 civilian victims subjected to killing, injury, abduction, and conflict-related sexual violence, out of 982 recorded cases.
Mostly male victims
Some 75 per cent of the victims were men, while 14 per cent of cases involved women, and 11 per cent, children.
This compares with 5,850 civilian victims documented in 2020. Cases of conflict-related sexual violence declined slightly from 211 in 2020, to 194 in 2021, but remained “unacceptably high”, said UNMISS in its press release.
Subnational conflict accounted for most victims in 2021. Warrap remained the state with the highest number of reported incidents, accounting for 24 per cent, followed by Western Equatoria (19 per cent), and Jonglei and Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) (17 per cent each).
Militia attacks
Many of the victims were killed or injured during attacks by armed community-based militias across Jonglei and the GPPA.
In May last year, violence surged with at least 230 killed, 120 injured, 178 abducted, and 14 women subjected to conflict-related sexual violence.
A concerning surge of fighting was also documented in Tambura, Western Equatoria, between ethnic militias who are allegedly affiliated with conventional parties to the conflict, said the report.
Such violence resulted in 440 deaths, 18 injured, 74 abductions, 64 victims of sexual violence and an estimated 80,000 people displaced.
UNMISS deployed peacekeepers proactively as well as pre-emptively, to conflict hotspots and conflict areas throughout the year.
Abuses must be investigated
The Mission established 116 temporary operating bases last year which enhanced the protection of civilians through sustained long and short distance patrols.
At the same time, UNMISS engaged in political and community consultations at the local, state and national level, adopting a Humanitarian-Development-Peace nexus approach.
UNMISS is urging the Government of South Sudan to investigate human rights violations and abuses wherever they are taking place, and to hold all perpetrators accountable, particularly as violence continues to surge in several parts of the country.

“BREAKING: Djiboutiian Police chief Col. Abdullahi Abdi and the former budget minister, Bode Roble, transferred to the notorious Gabode prison – Sources. Col. Farah was heard in a leaked tape saying that the country’s First Lady is more powerful than President Guelleh” (Morad News ,17.02.2022).
Today on the 17th February 2022, there been movement of several of accused of the plotted coup d’etat in Djibouti. That is reported by Morad News. While earlier today there was news of new appointments in the Police Service, as several of police commanders and army commanders are arrested in association with the plot.
So, since 15th February 2022 the government haven’t dropped much information or if any. There been little to none. This has made the opposition and dissident voices to call it a purge, instead of the announced coup plot. That wouldn’t be shocking, as the opposition activists or dissident are taken down by the authorities in Djibouti. Heck, Djibouti activists fleeing for Ethiopia can be forced to return home by Ethiopian authorities. Therefore, there are no safe-haven for asylum.
We can really wonder what’s going down. As the only information that has been dropped within 48 hours is that someone dropped a tape humiliating the President of 23 years. He must have felt mocked by that, but that isn’t a reason to arrest someone or detain several of leaders of the authorities within the Republic. Which now is getting new appointments like the ones that was announced today in the Police Service.
That’s why going forward and with the lack of information. It is hard to know what is going down. The silence and lack of transparency. Only make people speculate and question what is happening. President Guelleh should be more transparent, but that isn’t his way… so don’t expect some massive leaks, unless disgruntled civil servants will show what is really going on. Therefore, the only way we will know is if a whistleblower risks things, but doing that is risking their whole career and livelihood. That’s why I understand why nobody does that.
We just have to wait and see, if there will be any sort of information, which will peak our interests in this coup d’etat saga or purge. Peace.

“Insider information from Parliament indicates that a section of MPs angered by the actions of Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake, have now resorted to collecting signatures to have him impeached from the office of the Commissioner of Parliament” (NBS Television, 17.02.2022).
The Members of Parliament that is impeaching National Unity Platform MP Francis Zaake. Better do themselves a favour, as ancient relics they are and as analogue individuals they are. They better just delete themselves from all social media’s. This use the Unabomber approach on technology and get totally of the grid.
The National Resistance Movement MPs should just delete and suspend all of their accounts. They shouldn’t speak up on Twitter, Facebook or WhatsApp. Because, if they impeach Zaake MP for what he did. They got to walk silently and be super careful online. These folks shouldn’t be disrespectful or mock anyone online. The MPs better act righteous at all time and not be on a warpath online.
The NRM MPs and all representatives who signs off this… better act correct and cordial at any moment. Not matter how much some people troll them or violate their honour. Since, they have no courage or ability to under Zaake MP. Zaake MP who was humiliated in the plenary session and mocked there. He only used an avenue and a platform he knows how communicate. That is why this is bothersome.
The NRM MPs who is doing this better be angels online and on social media platforms. They better not act bitter or swiftly. If so… and if they are outside of the norm speaking of someone within the chambers of Parliament. They better ask forgiveness and accept impeachment. If any NRM MP is speaking of balderdash or ignorant towards someone. They better expect to be voted for and become a backbencher with no role within the 11th Parliament.
That should be the message to them. These MPs better be sweet-worded and speak any ill. If they do… these MPs better be called out. The MPs has to always act with courtesy and not spit any venom. They better be the soft hearted people with no evil and no animosity.
So, if they are doing this to Zaake for what he said. None of them can ever utter any words of satire, sarcasm or irony for that matter. They can only speak with soft arguments and be cordial with others. The MPs better be careful and act with cautious. This sort of act of impeachment only shows how little they can do or say. If they do this over this matter.
All of the ones signing it off, voting him out, better not have a life online but be analogue and release press releases/statements, as they cannot be people or a civilian online. No, they better be offline and not join social media. Since, they blocked Zaake from speaking his mind after being mocked in the Plenary session by the Deputy Speaker.
They should know better, but the majority only cares about their own. Therefore, these folks has no spine or understanding of Zaake even. That is just the reality here. It is vicious and these people better do themselves a favour.
Suspend. Delete and live offline. You guys don’t belong online. When you impeach someone over words like these. Your words and double standard will follow them forever. These MPs better act correct and not say any words that can be interpret as ill-willed. Since they went after another brother for doing the same. Peace.

Honorable Bahri sons and daughters:
In continuation of the series of violations and arrests carried out by the coup authorities against the revolutionaries, yesterday, near Tahrir Square in Bahri, they arrested a number of revolutionaries with some of them being chased into neighborhoods and the use of live bullets while chasing them.
To the honorable:
What the coup authorities are doing in terms of killing, displacement and arrest confirms that these authorities are helpless, confused, and trembling from the will of the sons and daughters of the homeland for real change that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people for a full democratic civil transformation.
We in the Sudanese Congress Party affirm our position rejecting such practices, which we will continue to express strongly and sternly and through our various revolutionary and professional sectors until the coup is overthrown and the civil democratic transition is restored to its right path.

Yesterday in Brussels was an unique day after a hostile election and aftermath, which the opposition has been in distress. Where the political parties haven’t been allowed to organize or even being viable. As the state has targeted CHADEMA and ACT-Wazelendo after the elections, which late President Joseph Magaufuli won.
Now, his successor President Samia Suluhu Hassan has met with the main Opposition Presidential Candidate Tundu Lissu who fled for exile after the election in 2020. It was clear to him that there was no relief or chances for a peaceful living after the polls. The Chama Cha Mapundzi (CCM) is overbearing and controlling the political space. Therefore, the ruling regime has it’s hands everywhere. That is obvious and the brutal truth in the United Republic of Tanzania.
The handshake is either a token of hope for reconciliation or creating a false belief of an open space. As the political leaders are talking and the possible negotiations. Since CHADEMA leaders are behind bars and so other political activists too. The state has used the law and the security agencies to target and silence it’s critics. That’s why even the talk of amending or changing the constitution has been deemed as a violation and reason to charge political leaders.
It is not like the era of freedom of speech or liberty to speak is at an all time high. The political parties are monitored, media is muffled and the state has their hands into everything. There is nothing they are not looking into and the political parties cannot operate without a go-sign from the government to have conferences or gatherings. Therefore, the CCM is the paternalistic organization, which deems everyone fit or unfit to whatever they propose.
The handshake and the pictures are a symbol of hope. While the laws, the strict affairs in Tanzania haven’t changed anything. The security agencies and the police will still hassle or go after the ones who dares to challenge the President. That’s why she has even suspended party press, which went out with news that it didn’t deem right.
I’m taking the news with caution. It’s too early to celebrate… when you know how the authorities has gone after dissidents, political leaders and journalists in the recent years. Tundu Lissu knows all of this and he cannot give way yet. If so… his selling the causes early and without proof of changing attitudes.
The laws are still the same and the authorities haven’t lost it’s spark. The President and the CCM needs to extend and olive branch, which it did in Brussels. However, it has to make a significant change in the United Republic to really matter. As there are victims of the political power-play and the usage of law, which isn’t only Freeman Mbowe, but his the symbol of the oppression in the Republic.
President Samia has to prove it now. It’s in her court and she has to open up. That will be painful and has to drop the guards down. However, Lissu shouldn’t sell himself short. Since he has paid the price to stand up against this government.
A handshake should never be enough, but it’s a nice symbol to buy time for possible change. Peace.
