“Last but not least, this Coalition agreement is not simply a political vehicle, “a mbus” which we politicians will disembark on as soon as we assume office. Kenyans can bear us witness that we have kept the CORD coalition in good working order, holding the Jubilee administration’s feet to the fire relentlessly and incessantly” (ODM – STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL SUPER ALLIANCE AT THE UNVEILING OF THE COALITION AGREEMENT
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga and Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) “co-founder” off together with President Uhuru Kenyatta. The semi-opposition leader and “Unofficial” Prime Minister since the Handshake. A man who outfoxed his other National Super Alliance Co-Principals Stephen Kalonzo Mysoka (Wiper Democratic Movement – WDM), Musalia Mudavadi (Amani National Congress – ANC) and Moses Wetan’gula (former Forum for the Restoration of Democracy–Kenya – FORD-Kenya).
The way Odinga has been able to trick himself to the top of the opposition was first sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the 7th December 2013 with Kalonzo and Wetangula. Where he had agreed with their alliance of Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) to share the Presidency.
First Odinga to stand as a Presidential Flag-bearer in 2013. In 2017 it was supposed to Kalonzo and by 2022 it was Wetan’gula’s turn. However, we knew this deal wasn’t to be honoured. The ODM and Odinga used his means and changed CORD as well and made a new alliance ahead of 2017. That is why the Flag-bearer case changed…
The creation of National Super Alliance (NASA) was convenient for Baba. He got away from the CORD MoU and could use the new alliance as a launch-pad for yet another try to for the Presidency. Raila was still the biggest man in the opposition and had huge popularity. Therefore, Odinga could become the man again. Because of the addition of Mudavadi and ANC. This in turn changed the original agreement of being Kalonzo’s time to shine. So, that Odinga could be the head of another outfit.
Now ahead of 2022 the battle-lines are turning. Just like they did ahead of 2017. Odinga is clearly aiming for the main role again. This time he can use the dismay and the bad behaviour of the Co-Principals to dismiss them. As they didn’t show-up for him when he needed them most at his Swearing-In ceremony. However, Odinga haven’t helped or served any help for Miguna Miguna who actually was there and was deported for his role that day.
Kalonzo have made himself useful for the government. Odinga have become the “Codename the Cleaner” and the “fixer” of the former Co-Principals. Raila can act in outrage for what happened in early 2018. However, he know perfectly well that he played the political game and got the greatest cards. That after giving up the Road Canaan and the NASA Manifesto itself. Just ditching the whole plan and taking everything for ODM.
Yes, Odinga could feel betrayed by the Co-Principals for not showing up that one day. Nevertheless, he betrayed the CORD MoU and NASA with the Handshake to create the BBI. Not like Odinga is an angle in this and they are the devils. Yes, they are all wrong on some, but that has all been done for selfish interests at one point or another.
The act of not showing up was in fear of what would happen to them. The handshake was buying peace and getting leverage with the state. That is why the ODM has more roles, committees and all the benefits of being associated with Kenyatta. This is why the ODM and KANU entanglement have made more friction within Jubilee than ever before. That is why DP Ruto is creating his own ‘Hustler Nation’ and Political Party as well.
It is all a reaction to the decisions made after the Fresh Presidential Elections. That Odinga and Kenyatta took that handshake. Yes, the Co-Principals did Odinga wrong and deserves to be shattered for that. However, not long after … Odinga betrayed that same oath where he said:
“I, Raila Amolo Odinga, in full realisation of the high calling assume the office of The People’s President of the Republic of Kenya, do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the people and the Republic of Kenya; that I will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of Kenya, as by law established and all other laws of the Republic as adopted by the People of Kenya; I will protect and uphold sovereignty and dignity of the People of Kenya. So help me God” – Raila Odinga on the 30th January 2018 at Uhuru Park.
For someone who is supposed to protect and defend the Constitution… the BBI is a referendum the political dynasties is asking for, but no the general public. This is just done to serve a few men and create offices for the career politicians. That’s why with the BBI he betrayed the oath he made. It was only by 9th March 2018 that he violated his own oath and started the joint-venture with Kenyatta.
So, now that his dismissing and throwing the Co-Principals under the bus. It is the third election and ahead of that. He does it to ensure his the highest ranking leader. That is the gist of it. He got his way in 2013. Able to change the alliance and stand again. Now, he can use the “betrayal” card and call them disposable. Yes, his not wrong there either. Wetan’gula have lost most of his “power” since the last election. Mudavadi isn’t much either. Kalonzo could easily join a KANU-Jubilee coalition to get relevance.
That is why Odinga doesn’t need these gentlemen. However, he has had them as a team, but this handshake, BBI and betrayals in the city have affected them all. It can be used in all sorts of arguments and play. So, if Odinga goes hard on it. They can easily say his betraying his own oath. That he never honoured the CORD MoU of 2013 and didn’t even care about the NASA Coalition Agreement of 2017 either. As he used this political platform to get a political vehicle with the BBI. This is why Odinga should be careful how he goes after his Co-Principals. Even as an outsider like me can find enough troublesome acts.
Odinga or Baba, the ODM can bury the NASA now, as they have moved-on. However, it only shows that he cannot be trusted. As he will bury his allies for political gains and will not honour agreements himself, unless he earns something out of it quickly.
That is why people should not only blame the Co-Principals of the Opposition coalition, but look at the front-figure and what he did too. As he wasn’t alone in this, but has built a persona bigger than life. This is why he needs to be accountable as well. Not only Kalonzo, Mudavadi or Wetan’gula. They deserve to be mocked, ridiculed and questioned for actions, but so should Odinga as well. He wasn’t alone… he did as a part of team and he needs to answer himself.
When he oppose to endorse anyone else. That isn’t shocking. He didn’t want to do that in 2013 and 2017. So, why should he do that in 2022? That doesn’t make sense. When he doesn’t value CORD MoU. We should have known he was in it for himself only and nobody else. Peace.
