EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Floods in Sudan – Situation Report
HIGHLIGHTS
SITUATION OVERVIEW
Flood waters started to recede in most of Sudan, following several weeks of torrential downpours that have caused deaths, displacement, and massive destructions to key infrastructure and livelihoods across the country.
As of 6 October, 155 people lost their lives and the number of people critically affected reached over 875,000, according to the Government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission. At least 150,000 refugees and internally displaced people are among those affected, according to UNHCR.
More than 82,500 houses have been completely destroyed and there are reports of nearly 92,600 houses damaged, generating dire and urgent need for shelter and household supplies. Several farms are flooded, especially in riverine areas along the White Nile, Blue Nile and Nile rivers, according to WFP, in a country where 9.6 million people are facing severe hunger.
Over 560 schools are damaged and another 60 are being used as shelter by displaced people. This could further compromise the starting of the academic year, already postponed from September to the end of November, due to challenges with resources to adapt the fragile education system to minimize the risks of COVID-19. Access to clean water and health services, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been compromised. Thousands of health centres are damaged or non-functional, around 30,000 latrines collapsed and the break of the Bout Earth Dam in Blue Nile State, on 29 July, risks compromising access to water for over 100,000 people, including IDPs and refugees, who rely on it as their primary source of water. The extensive level of damages increase the challenges to prevent and treat possible disease outbreaks. Malaria, dengue and cholera are endemic in several parts of Sudan, and the risk of these and other water-borne and vector-borne disease increases with the floods and stagnant water. The flooding also brings protection concerns, especially amongst children, women, and displaced people. Families who lost everything can be forced to rely on negative coping strategies to survive, including child labour that is already being reported, according to humanitarian partners. The lack of education services poses children at higher risk of exploitation, and the extra burden on affected families also increases cases of violence against women and girls. People living with disabilities or chronic diseases, elderly, pregnant and lactating women also need specific services that are now compromised by the destruction of facilities and reduced services.
The Government and aid organizations are closely monitoring the situation and providing life-saving assistance to people affected. Humanitarians reached over 400,000 people with critical support. But the stock is being depleted rapidly and more support, including from donors, is urgently needed. The Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan for 2020, which seeks US$1.6 billion, is less than 46 per cent funded.

In Juba on Friday, the Cabinet decision to change currency came to the public. This is happening after several of attempts and changes in Ministry of Finance. However, none has lasted or made a difference. Therefore, the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) have decided to drop the South Sudanese Pound and create another one.
Nevertheless, economics and financial policies aren’t that simple. There are some key components missing to create the balances in order. First, the state can and is allowed to change their currencies. That is up to the sovereign. Is that advisable?
Most like not, because you have to build a foundation and have the balance sheets in order. The grander public got to understand the change. The markets have to invest in the futures of the currency and it has to trusted.
It can be a financial trick, a juxtaposition to just to get you out of a hurdle. You move from one account to another. But, then again… you get the same value for practically nothing. Maybe, even the currency has no value, as nobody trades on a value that nobody trusts. That is why its key to build trust and monetary policies around what you already have.
Unless, you want a Bond-Note bonanza and erupting inflation out of spiral. Making the pennies and dimes worthless anyway. If that is the trick, the Bank of South Sudan and Ministry of Finance should just go ahead. Instead of securing the measures, the trade policies and the monetary instruments of the Republic.
They are instead re-issuing a new currency. They are dropping the SSP for something else. There have to be a transition period. A time and opportunity to change the currencies. As the time goes for the switch, the public and businesses can go from SSP to whatever it will be. If not, then they are draining the system and emptying the coffers of people. Which in the end, will also ensure there is less money in circulation.
The saga of the SSP will haunt the new currency. Because, this is just changing the name, but not changing the elements. They are taking away the history and the namesake. However, the same lack of trust and monetary instruments are still there. If they had these and ensured the markets and safeguarded the currency. Then the public could have some trust and if there was measures in place. It wouldn’t be necessary to switch and ditch the old one.
This here is a sign of weakness, lack of process and just sudden change. In hope that this is the remedy. This sort of action is the quick fix and hope it can miraculously save the day. However, it is never that easy. Especially, when your not only building market dynamics, but also on trust. When you need several of components to work in tandem and be at each others side. If they are not. Then one will beat the other and in the end the citizen or consumer is the loser. As the currency gets devalued since the authorities cannot contain the brutal assessment of currency.
This is short-sighted. It really is and the next one will have the same remaining issues. Your folding one chapter, but your just starting where the other left off. It will be just a matter of time before this stinks too. Since, the same fella’s are running the shop and their game is to earn a quick buck. Peace.

It is getting closer to November and the final days of the campaign. We are in the middle of October 2020 and the race is stagnating. The President and his party is sort of scrambling. They are trying to dignify things, but it’s not working. Only the hard-liners, the love-birds of the President is still on the train. The moderates, the libertarians and other conservatives have already endorsed Joe Biden the opponent.
Donald J. Trump and his campaign last time had not only the help of right-wing media. It had help of former fridge media houses, such as Breitbart and others. Who all went up and became well-known. These Alt-Right web-pages stirred the controversy and also racism, which have been proven with the policies made in the term of this Presidency.
Therefore, Trump had influential backers with him. This was also the help of Cambridge Analytica and WikiLeaks. These dropped information and social media campaigns, which targeted the public. To narrow the space of the other candidates and change the narratives of them. This by getting bots to run Facebook groups and so fourth. The Trump Campaign had big game on these platforms and was able to manufacture consent for it. Because, the new-cycles was controlled by these ways of spreading information.
That is the sort of way it hasn’t worked as well this time around. Because, if it was to work like last time. There would have been plenty of headlines, questioning the health of Biden and his history. Where they would question his foundation, his businesses and his family. Alas, that isn’t the case. It is only small pieces of it, but not to the extent of last time.
Trump and his Campaign Team had the backers of WikiLeaks. They dropped vital emails, documents and internal documents of the Democratic Party. Others like Cozy Bear and Guccifer 2.0. These dropped intel and weaponized documents to hit the Democratic Party directly. These things made it harder for the Clinton Campaign. As they had to defend that and also wiggle with the direct attacks.
This is the Trump Campaign lacking in 2020. They don’t have foreign backers who are leaking information. All of this was giving a helping hand. To ensure the image and the idea of Trump presidency. He didn’t get the leaks, the hacking and questionable intelligence released to that extent. Yes, there was one dossier made by a former agent. However, that only did a little damage, compared to the ones dropped steadily on WikiLeaks. That was hurting Clinton non-stop.
That is why the Trump Campaign is struggling. Not only because of the incompetence and lack of strategy, but also because they have no real dirt on Biden. The Trump Campaign cannot assault and doesn’t have the support of foreign hackers. Who are willing to use all sort of techniques to get information and drop it. This is why the Trump Campaign haven’t the steam as it did in 2016.
Trump Campaign needs a WikiLeaks, it cannot run on slogans and on the charisma of the President. Especially, when he cannot listen to advice and do the right thing. He rather spill conspiracies and misuse of force. Instead, of actually do proper politicking.
The Trump Campaign cannot even sell a simple idea. They need someone drop dirt on the opponents. Because, they have so little to trade. It is that simplistic. The US President needs a Assange to save his ass. However, I don’t think there is time or someone willing to do so.
We know that Trump easily works with fo
