Opinion: Gen. Babangida warned about Buhari’s attitude

Regrettably, it turned out that Major-General Muhammadu Buhari was too rigid and uncompromising in his attitudes to issues of national significance. Efforts to make him understand that a diverse polity like Nigeria required recognition and appreciation of differences in both cultural and individual perceptions, only served to aggravate these attitudes” – General Ibrahim Babangida on the 27th August 1985

It has been years since the first term of President Muhammadu Buhari with his Supreme Military Council and the Federal Executive Committee, which lasted between 13th September 1983 to 27th August 1985. This period clearly didn’t seal the fate of Buhari, as he was elected again to the Presidency on the 31st March 2015 and won a second term on the 27th February 2019.

Therefore, the warning signs should have been there, as there must have been valid reasons for the toppling of him and the lack of progress after his own coup in late 1983. The man rose to power was toppled, but was able to return to power 30 years later. Which is a rare occurrence and maybe the public had forgotten about his first term.

Buhari is clearly missing the edge. Only spoken once was about the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). His spokesperson saying it has to be dealt with due process and isn’t a overnight affair to dismantle the unit. Alas, the Federal Government is initially saying that the outcry isn’t that important and it has to be done with slow working protocol. Instead of initiating change and make people trust law enforcement.

The President Buhari have used the common term “of a few bad eggs” but when the system is built against the public and is tormenting them. Then it isn’t a few bad eggs, but a whole organization that needs reform and swiftly too.

When we knows this, maybe Gen. Babangida warning about Buhari 30 years comes back to haunt the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As they are living under his reign yet again. Maybe what Ibrahim saw is true of the character of Buhari. That his to rigid and uncompromising to make changes. Only his will and stern ideas gets play. While the others have to go through hoops to get things done.

This explains his reluctant way of now navigating through the public outcry and demonstrations. As there is more violence, arrests and police brutality served the public. Instead of actually listening to the pleas and the organizers behind the #EndSars. That would have been smart of him. Alas, that wasn’t in him.

I’m sure some would have preferred the “android” version of him or the legendary “Jubril of Sudan”. That would have at least given hope that someone else would have fixed Police Force and ended SARS.

President Buhari and the authorities should listen to the days of demonstrations. The voices of concern and exposing the police brutality. Which shouldn’t be a thing, but is persistent in the Republic. The President should see this and make actions to make it stop. As he represents the public and not himself.

Buhari has two ear and only one mouth. Clearly, he doesn’t use neither much. Only for publicity stunts and damage control. However, he doesn’t use to make a difference. That is apparently too much to ask. He rather preserve the bad eggs. Peace.

Opinion: Zuma needs to man-up and face the truth

Former President Jacob Zuma are still facing the investigation and the criminal proceedings of the State of Capture case, which is investigated through the Zondo Commission. A Commission, he and his lawyers are working hard to discredit and also deflect blame.

The former President is clearly fishing for sympathy, when he invokes the narrative of living his whole life through Apartheid. Yes, he lived through like most of his generation. However, he also rose into the stratosphere and got amass power, which he had for a decade or so. It is not like the former President didn’t have all the luxurious benefits and the connections at his finger-tips for a period. Even all parts of the state was following him and obey his commands.

Therefore, the statement released recently is only a defensive and unnecessary document. It is not serving his case nor the investigation any good. Yes, his playing the victim, but that’s not new. The State of Capture case has been going on for years. While in power he could deflect, muffle and stop the process. However, now its not possible and he got to play the sainthood like his the pope or a cardinal. While he rather drink, enjoy the company of a nun and use the offerings to build himself a monastery on the top of hill.

This is why Zuma can defend the looking into his kids. We know the kids also enjoyed perks with the Gupta Connections and the State Owned Enterprises. They also got tenders and other deals, which was not accessible by others. Therefore, when an investigation follows the money, you never know where it ends. If they follow the drugs, you find drug-lords and cartels. However, if you follow the profit of that illicit trade. You don’t know where the money is going and could end up in the pockets of other powerful men as well. The same is happening to Zuma.

Zuma can plead his innocence and plead not guilty. However, he did pocket money and built a village in Nkandla. While he was in office. He suddenly could afford a second home in Dubai. Clearly, having more money than his salary would make possible. The man who came from hardships suddenly was Richie Rich. That doesn’t come out of nowhere. There is someone offering a deal and you accepted it. If it was using your power to fix Eskom and other SOEs in your time.

Therefore, those statements and letters your writing is only showing that you have no remorse to misuse and directly taking money out of the public coffers. Which you had no trouble doing in the years you we’re in power. Zuma had all the opportunities to do the right thing. However, as time went by and options came your way. You took them, you ate it and you enjoyed the perks. The same happen to your family members, which you want to shield now. But you let them eat of the sudden wealth and fortunes that came your way.

Zuma, if you wanted to shield your kids. You should have shielded them away from the Gupta’s and the other associates giving you sweet-deals. As the President you could have pushed them away and blocked them. Instead, you guided them and made it possible them. This was a rise to power and you felt untouchable. That is why the risk of paying a price seemed unlikely. That is why you made it possible for them to get connected.

That is why it’s late to cry foul now. You knew what you did and how you acted in office. As President, you knew what you we’re doing and what access you made possible. It is a sorry ass excuse to ask investigators to distance themselves. Maybe, as President he shouldn’t have received money from Oakbay and other companies. Maybe, his family members shouldn’t have gotten associated with the Gupta’s. Because, if he was interested in not having them involved in his business, they shouldn’t been entangled in anyway.

Alas, greed is a powerful force and it can swallow anything in its way. In this regard, it took the family and foundation of Zuma’s power. He ate it all with his greed and misuse of power. To an extent, that is still invested to this day and still not over. Peace.

Opinion: Took 34 years to ensure food security

The time is right for Uganda’s leadership and technocrats to take heed and ensure a transformed food system which responds to all the four dimensions of food security and nutrition”Justine Kasule Lumumba on the 16th October 2020 (Farooq Kasule – ‘NRM secretariat champions food security’’, New Vision, 17.10.2020).

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) is proving why there are on a due date. Their deadline of being in power should be passed the expiration date. Since, they are still in power over all this years. You would think they had fixed the basics. Alas, that is not the case.

The NRM who are always praising their track-record and achievements since 1986. It is really brilliant, that a government of this calibre is still not succeeding in the basics. To ensure the citizens and the grand public having food. That is an issue for all governments since the early beginnings of man kind. This why even in Roman time, the tyrants ran the regime with bread and circus. Giving the public food and entertainment. So, they the elite could enjoy the spoils of the empire.

The NRM is surely lacking, when its time to fix this issue now. Food security should have been ensured long time ago. The party has had decades to fix this, have safety nets and ensured the public had food during crisis. However, the multi-nationals and UN Organizations are feeding the system. So, that the NRM can be lazy for years, because they are covering for their misgivings. They are coming with funds and logistics to pick up the slack of the state. This shouldn’t be shocking, because that is the sad reality.

If it wasn’t for donors and others, the pressure would have much stronger to fix this. The NRM can lean on them and anticipate them to cover it. That is why it has taken this long. Still, it is shows their lack of care and concern. Since, this has been an issue since 1986 and not fixed by the year of 2020.

The President, the whole regime should be horrified of themselves. That they haven’t been able to secure all citizens. This is sort of the backbone, the thing that keeps people alive. The same with lack of shelter and water. All of these basics are the sort of thing this state haven’t properly prioritized. Since, there is always a war to cover, an election and new police units to use funds upon. If not another prestige project of the regime, which will not cover the needs of society in general.

That is why yesterday’s statement from the Secretary General of the NRM is insulting, infuriating, but also showing lack of care of the citizens. This isn’t just a regime who started to rule last year. No, they started mid-80s and still haven’t fixed this. That is how little concerned they are about this. Why?

Because, someone else is always footing the bill and taking over for the slack of state. There is always some happy go-lucky CSO/NGO/UN Organization who can patch the hurt. They will come anyway and will have budgets, logistics and the needed expertise to run the operation. Not only in the middle of a crisis, but in ordinary life too.

The NRM should know better, they have had all the tools, the time and the capital, if they cared about this. However, there has always been some other priority, which isn’t about the basics to spend the fortunes on. Peace.

Zimbabwe: Operation Restore Legendary Junta is here to stay…

People call us junta, the President (Emmerson Mnangagwa) is a war veteran, Vice-President (Constantino) Chiwenga is a soldier, I am a soldier, (Housing) minister (Daniel) Garwe here is a soldier and we will rule not minding what the media says. We will continue to rule. Civilians will not” (…) “Those of you who are like dogs barking at the rising moon, you can come back home because the moon will continue rising. There is nothing wrong in coming back home” – Vice President Kembo Mohandi on the 16th October 2020 (Newsday.co.zw – ‘Junta here to stay: Mohadi’ 17.10.2020).

Vice-President Mohandi revealed and said things straight-forward. So, the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) is saying what people are saying about it. It is a military enterprise with military leaders. The government is a junta and they are not claiming to be otherwise.

This is not shocking, the other VP is acting like the government is an army. It is Command Government. It is Command Fasting, Command Agriculture and Command Health Care. ZANU-PF is not hiding it anymore.

We knew that the military took over during the Operation Restore Legacy. This has been known and clearly they have more control, than they wanted to tell in the beginning. However, with the years now and security. The gloves are off and the big-guns are now secured.

That Kembo Mohandi is saying this now. Shows that they are not fearing anything. They are just initiating, that the army will control the state and not have a civilian government. This is why the governance and transparency will be lacking. Since, they are all following chain of command and not listen to civilians.

We now know that these folks intends to stay. The New Dispensation is a 2nd Republic of a junta. They are willing to use force and intimidate. They are willing to wreck havoc to human rights, political activism and opposition leaders.

When you put a government like this in power. You should expect impunity. An armed government who work with military means. Will not respect the citizens, but force themselves on people. It will use soldiers and police officers to intimidate the public. If you disagree, you will meet the authorities, because your supposed to obey the chain-in-command.

There is at least not any question anymore. The ZANU-PF is a junta, a military government and they not a civilian one. They are willing to overstay and not respect elections or the will of the people. Since, they have the weapons and the army behind them. Peace.
