There is something striking out there, before we know that President Museveni signed off plenty of guidelines and measures on the 18th March 2020. Before that there wasn’t really any significant concern. Especially, since there was no causes or anyone who had caught the disease in the Republic. Yesterday evening the report of the first subject was revealed. This means, valuable time has been lost.
People have not followed the guidelines, neither been in quarantine. There are plenty of issues. The state haven’t facilitated nor resolved the issues. Instead hoped on a prayer that it would pass this bullet. Instead, they now are catching it, without knowing where the ones travelling with patient zero, neither whose he been associated with since arriving in the Republic. That is how a spread start.
Here is some quotes of the President. Showing his intent.
“The Ministry of Health has issued guidelines for all mass gatherings in the country. Please take note and cooperate accordingly. We have no suspected or confirmed case of coronavirus and we still can avoid it” (Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, 10.03.2020).
“Uganda has been spared from this virus so far by the mercies of God despite the false alarms. So, as God-fearing people, we need to pray for the whole country. I ask each one of you to pray in your homes, and God will hear us” (Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, 18.03.2020).
“ I am glad we are praying, but even as we pray, we must also continue doing as much to battle coronavirus. God created us in his own image and gave us the power to establish dominion over nature. Eventually, we shall defeat COVID-19. I never believe in pessimism. I always look at finding solutions, yes we shall have problems in the economy, tourism, night clubs, bars will suffer but other aspects of the economy will thrive” (Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, 21.03.2020).
“All these measures are in addition to what I previously said on Wednesday last and will be in force for 32 days from Wednesday. The SOPs regarding the cargo transporters will be put out by the Ministry of Health. The young people should be very careful. Previously, there was a belief that young people can easily survive this virus. However, information is beginning to come in that quite abit of the people who are dying are young people” (Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, 22.03.2020).
We know that today and on the 18th March 2020, President Museveni put in more regulations to stop the COVID-19 and Coronavirus in the Republic. All these measures can be positive to stop the spread. However, he should have used legal means and through parliament to ensure the safety of society and the citizens.
The President uses his power, the high above and his words are the law, apparently. Because, his measures are put in place at once. The closure of borders, airport stopping and so-on. Museveni seemed positive about it. Even as it was spreading all across the globe. That is false positive and not really realistic. As there are enough globetrotters and elites to get people sick from this everywhere.
We have to see how this one goes. What we do see is that the President acting now. The whole Republic needs too. Everyone has to take their part. Because, this is not just a simple flue, this is deadly. Just look at Italy and you go figure the cost of not doing the right thing now. Peace.
