In Khartoum today, the people again went to the streets to demonstrate. Because, the Sovereign Council has decided to retire the army officials who was in support of the revolution last year. The Transitional Military Council (TMC), the armed wing of the transitional government have decided to purge the army and also elevate itself. This causes outrage, as this is yet another soft takeover and not a promising step towards a civilian government, which was the whole idea behind the revolution in the first place.
Today, the authorities have used live bullets, violence and massive amount tear-gas to rid of the new surge of revolutionaries in the streets. Also, injuries are being made to the civilians and again random arrests of the ones protesting. Surely, this is back ot the old days.
The news that sparked this:
“In a statement released on Tuesday, the army spokesman Amer Mohamed al-Hassan said the retirees’ list has been done with high professionalism” His statement was published after the circulation in the social media of three separate lists seen by Sudan Tribune with “top secret” including 15 sub lieutenants, 29 lieutenant commanders and 35 colonels. Among the 15 sub-lieutenants appears the name of Mohamed Siddiq Ibrahim Ahmed, who was the first military officer to join the protesters outside the army headquarter during the first week of April before al-Bashir’s ouster” (Sudan Tribune – ‘Sudanese army retires junior-rank officers’ 18.02.2020).
While that has happen. The Transitional Military Council (TMC) of the Sovereign Council has promoted themselves. On the 19th February 2020, this was reported:
Former head of General Intelligence Agency (GIS) Abubaker Damblad has been promoted to Lieutenant General.
Member of the Sovereignty Council, Yassir Al-Atta has been promoted to Lieutenant General.
Member of the Sovereignty Council, Shams El-Deen Al-Kabashi has been promoted to Lieutenant General.
Head of the General Intelligence Agency (GIS) Jamal Abdelmajeed has been promoted to Lieutenant General.
Head of the Sovereignty Council, Abdulfatah Al-Burhan has been promoted to Marshal.
This is surely again a sign of troubling time ahead. As the TMC wing of the Sovereign Council have been working to consolidate power. They wouldn’t have done that this way, if they didn’t believe they could sustain it now. The agreement of the trial period of three years would give the TMC time to change and also get more power by softly making decisions. Which they have now done by getting rid of the ones who supported the revolution. While promoting the ones whose loyal to the new leadership and who will follow Al-Burhan. That is the message of the acts made.
This is why people are going into the streets, as the revolution wasn’t made for the army and their ranks, but for the public and their will for a civilian government. Seems like the TMC forgot that piece of information or neglected it. Because, power is enticing and rewarding. Peace.

Since early 2017, Dr. Stella Nyanzi have gotten into legal trouble because of her public statements. She was charged on the 23rd March 2017 for offensive communication, as she deemed the President as a “Pair of Buttocks” in a Facebook post. Ever since then she has gone in and out of prison. However, the longest stint was 18 months in Luzira Woman’s Prison. Today, the International Criminal Division have ordered to overturn her conviction and sentence from lower courts. The state also lost the appeal on the grounds of offensive communication.
Therefore, today on the 20th February 2020, she has finally been released after struggling on the docket, before taken back to Luzira briefly to sign-out and then released. This has been a to long journey over some “buttocks”.
That the timeline between 23rd March 2017 to 20th February 2020, she has been taken in- and out of prison. She has been carrying the weight and been resilient in her quest for freedom. Since the charge in March 2017, the amount of days carrying this has been the total of 1064 days, or 2 years and 10 months and 28 days. That’s a long time for one Facebook post.
Dr. Nyanzi has gone through a lot, she lost an unborn baby because of it too. There must been an overload of pain and suffering, which we cannot understand. Still, with all that pressure, all the negativity and the destructive pattern of the state towards her. She has stand strong and been able to push through. That is admirable and should be recognized.
Stella Nyanzi has carried a lot of pain, a lot of suffering and continued. That is what we all should admire about her. That she has stood up to injustice, unfair rulings and court judgments, which were biased in favour of the President and explicitly constraining the ability of people to express themselves online.
Nyanzi isn’t perfect, she isn’t aiming for it either, but what she does has a point. That the President is a pair of buttocks. That he acts like that and talks like that. This is why he could address himself as the Leopards Anus, but she couldn’t call him buttocks. Which is double standard and hypocrisy at its best.
She has paid for this. Stella has been through a journey, which many wouldn’t wish on anyone. Still, she’s there and able to fight for her causes. Justifiably so. No one can deny Stella that. The ones that does is ignorant of the message and the courage of standing up to the military might and powers to be with only a computer and a free mind. That is what she has done.
So the verdict on the President. His not a saint, neither is he grand, when he let one of his subjects be in prison for over 18 months and charged falsely with offensive communication for over 1064 days. He is a “pair of buttocks”, Mr. President you just have to live with it. Peace.

“President Museveni today morning summoned Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga to State House ahead of the appearance of the first lady, Janet Kataha Museveni, before Parliament. Janet Museveni, who is the minister of Education and Sports, is scheduled to appear before Parliament to explain why cabinet ignored a resolution of parliament regarding the implementation of the new lower secondary school curriculum” (Amon Katongulu – ‘Museveni “summons” Kadaga hours to wife’s appearance before Parliament’ 20.01.2020, Nilepost.ug).
When your reading things like this, it should boggle your mind. It shouldn’t be like this, first and foremost, any minister should answer for their work in Parliament and accept scrutiny of it. Any minister should be accountable to the parliament and be asked in a plenary session about the work been done in any given ministry. However, because of her peculiar position and placement in the world, Janet Museveni can get off the hook.
Instead, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has to answer the call of the husband and President Yoweri Kaguta Musveni. She got to show up, when the “high above” calls her. Kadaga was summoned and had to answer it, if not she would be in big trouble. Even if Janet never has to answer to anybody and only dwell about the troubles inside the Kitchen Cabinet at the State House.
At this point, Janet can act like “Gucci Grace” or Grace Mugabe could in her hey-day. Because, as long as her man, Yoweri is in power. She can do whatever and get away with it. She can get people in prison, sentence and be the most insulting character in the public. Still, no one will dare to push her limits.
That is why Kadaga has to answer; she’s in that place because of loyalty and need. Janet will live on in power and maybe change a post, but will not without power as long as the husband has it. Yoweri want to give her anything. Last time it was ability to squander Karamoja funds, now it is education funds instead. A different ministry, but still the same outcome.
Janet might look supreme and act supreme, but she’s not. She’s part of the household of the President and reign because of it. However, she has no grounds for it. She could be on the pedestal and do the acts of VP Ssekandi as the First Lady, but instead she wants actual power and that been granted by the husband. There is no initial merit to her position nor her skill set. Except for being the bedmate of the head of state.
So, if your insulting her intelligence, which I am sure not so hard to do. You can get summoned and get into legal trouble even. Because, no one should dare too do that. She’s a Museveni and the second in line of the First family. No one should even question them and that’s why she never answers to calls of the Parliament. Nevertheless, the Speaker got to run like Usain Bolt to the State House, when they summon her.
Yes, the First Lady and Minister after the summons of Kadaga showed up finally in Parliament, but after ditching previous attempts to get her there. Clearly, indicating more to this. However, don’t be fooled. The Janet and Yoweri doesn’t thread this lightly, they have some ammo behind their movements.
Herein, lay the problem, the issues of having your wife in government. Herein, lay the grounds for mismanagement and lack of oversight, which can only be stated repeatedly. Peace.
